MF towels..Questions after use.??

Hey there, i have a few questions on MF's, maybe someone can help answer...

Do you guys wash your MF's all together, ie. the ones you use for the polish, wax, QD..?

Would there be a problem if i used (after intial use and washing) a MF i previously used for the removal of my S100, to remove another product, say my Meg's #9..? In other words, mix them up and use them to remove another product than what i originally removed when they were new...

Do you guys mark your MF's, if so how, to keep track which one was used for what and so on...I would like to get a few suggestions before i assume its ok to mix and match MF's i used to remove certain products, and possibly ruin them. Thanks for your comments

Oh BTW, i have Pakshaks MF towels (10 light blue ones)...waiting to order 30 more and 2 waffle weaves....Hit me back Ranney, if you read this.

The mf towels I use to polish, wax and QD all get thrown in a large bucket with warm water and dawn--I do this to remove as much of the cleaning products I can from the mf before they all go into the washer on delicate.

I will give the load a second rinse cycle and then dry them part way before allowing them to dry completely on the fluff (no heat) cycle.

I see no problem with using these mf towels for the waxing, polishing or QDing. Now, I do separate my mf towels that I use for door jams and wheels--those are cleaned separately and are used exclusively for such grungy work.

I just throw them in the washer all together and use liquid tide. Oh and I used to use the delicate cycle but I just use regular now...the mf's I use don't come apart at all (Meguiar's Ultimate Wipes).

I use Pak Shak's MF's and just throw them in the washer together and do an extra rinse cycle and then line dry them. I usually use the green ones to QD, the lavendar to remove polish, and the light blue ones to remove polish or wax. I use two separate (CMA miracle and viper) strictly for cleaning glass. I use Big Blue towels to dry. I wash all of these together and sometimes I might use the different color Pak MF's for a different task than stated above. I don't think it really matters that much if you don't get them too dirty or saturated with product.....at least I have not noticed any problem.

Wash al together HOT HOT HOT water...Tide or Equal and I throw in a splash of Dawn............

Double rinse cylce.............

Throw into a vacuumed out dryer and dry.............

Thanks for the heads up about Dawn--never caught Ranney's note or did not read it thoroughly.

Note to self--no more Dawn for MF--only Tide.

Several people, including myself, responded to Ranney's note as to why Dawn would damage MF's, and there was no response. I can't see how dishsoap would be harmful to polyester while laundry soap would not. They are both alkaline solutions. Until I see some proof, I will continue to use whatever is handy.

Powdered is all right as long as it all dissolves. If some granules did not dissolve, the MF will trap that granule, and when the MF hits your paint ==> swirl city.

best combo i have used is woolite - a full capful for a small load - double rinse - wash in warm water rinse with cool - i get no residue

drip dry

I've also read that some people wash their MFs in really hot or even boiling water and it doesn't seem to hurt them. A guy named Prinz (not Prinz II) even threw them in a pressure cooker and said they were fine! This kind of flies in the face of advice given by lots of people to wash MFs in cold or luke warm water. I think some people have said some of these cheap MFs from Walmart or dollar stores or something even suggest doing this and that they got plusher afterwards.

I did some amateur research on this subject and read that since microfiber is made out of polyester and nylon, you'd have to raise its temperature to something like 125 degrees Celsius to even soften (not melt) it, which would be impossible in a boiling pot. The melting points were roughly 300 degrees for polyester and 200 for nylon, depending on who you ask and the some variations.

3M MF cloths say they are safe for machine washing in 95 C (200 F) water.

I'm also not sure how Dawn could hurt MFs either..... I would think it would be good for getting the oily residues out.

Some of my towels have shown a marked reduction in absorbency when compared to when they were new (washed, but unused). I sometimes notice that the smell of some of my QDs are still in the towel after washing so I'm beginning to wonder if residues from buffing stuff off (wax, Klasse) is starting to "waterproof" them. I'm seriously contemplating using some combination of almost-boiling water and detergent/Dawn/Simple Green or whatever to do something about this since it's cramping my QD sessions....

Thoughts? Comments? Flames.....?

I usually soak the MFs in a tub with some warm to hot water and some oxi-clean. Let them soak overnight, then in the morning drain and add more warm water with some liquid detergent. Agitate with my hands, drain, rinse with water, drain, then throw in the washer and run the rinse and spin cycle.

Thanks for all the suggestion and comments....

So is there ANY problems with using the MF's to remove another product than the original product it removed, prior to washing..?? Is this recommended or should i mark them somehow to distinguish what i used them for, as all my MF's are/will be light blue..?

Not as far as I know. The only restriction seems to be with glass. It's often been recommended that you have separate (and separately washed), dedicated MFs for glass cleaning because of residues not totally washing out and causing problems.
