hello, i have a black 2001 chevy that i had prof. buffed out in aug. but now have alot of fine to medium scratches/swirls.. i didnt have a clue on proper washing to prevent micro marring until i came here.. my question : yesterday i used scratch x , twice ,and noticed some minor improvement, can i just keep going over the vehicle with scratch x until their gone?? i dont want to get it buffed again. ( $$$$ )

is this the best stuff on the market( scratch x) for use by hand??

if i bought the pc7424 someday down the line, and use scatch x or something else, will i have better results? i know it would be easier.. thanks

Well, scratch X is a good product, but it is by no means perfect. Only so much can be achieved by hand. You second problem is, well your car is black. I have a black car and have used Scratch X on many occassions, but it will never get *all* the marring out. Nothing by hand will. There is some marring and scratches that machines wont even get out. Dont get me wrong, Scratch X can make some drastic improvements, but you need to go over a small are (bout 6x6 inches) probably 3-4 times before there is a major improvement. A PC will get you better results, but I dont think Scratchx can be used by machine.

Hope this helps

"Never" is a strong word; a better choice might be "Never within what most people would consider a reasonable time with a reasonable amount of effort".

Since it works by hand and has to be safe, it is a very strong but also very soft abrasive. So, it will work very hard for the first 15 seconds or so, then break down gradually and easily to nothing. That's using a quarter sized dollop on a 6" square. And I usually have to do that area at least twice if working by hand with ScratchX.

So, I'd say that you could work a couple or three days, 6 hours a day, with 3 or 4 tubes of ScratchX, and get most of those out.

I'm not being sarcastic. That's the trade you make, when you go by hand rather than by machine. ScratchX can do the job, but you'll need a lot of ScratchX, a lot of time, and a lot of elbow grease.

My advice is to break it down panel by panel, and just do a panel a day. Figure on taking a week or two. The longest journey still starts with the first step.

You may get uneven results when using ScratchX over large areas. ScratchX is in my arsenal of detailing supplies. However, I reserve its use to reparing paint chips or small marring & scratches. On larger areas, I use a PC7424 and IP/FPII.

thanks for the advice people, what exactly is ip/fp11 ? actually ive used 1 1/2 tubes so far, and very strong rubbing...

if i were to get a pc 7424 and use some med. cut polishes would that solve my problem?? this website ( in the " learn" area), claims you can get out all swirls/ scratches/cobb webs, with a pc 7424 they even show pictures( do you think they just used fillers), but reading these forums, it seems i just have to live with swirls because i have a black vehicle??

IP and FPII are Menzerna Intensive Polish and Final Polish II.

Yes, that's exactly right, you CAN get out rotary swirls with a PC. It's still hard work, but you can do it.

Don't worry about fillers. If you use the machine properly, both polishes with fillers and polishes without fillers will do the job right; it's personal preference, and I for one use both. People here get outstanding results either way. Just because a product contains oils and solids doesn't mean it didn't get all the swirls out, too; it's just harder to tell if it did.

No, you don't have to live with the swirls on a black vehicle. I did the black Audi S4 in the PC tutorial, and I guarantee you the swirls were completely gone. I used a combination of Meguiar's #83 (with fillers) and the Menzernas (without fillers), then used fillers again when I was sure the swirls were gone (Meguiar's #80) and finished with Meguiar's #20.
