Meguires

BlackSunshine

2005 Chev Cavalier, Black
Just bought some scratch X tonight for some small scratches.....can I use this on the whole car for swirls and as the final polish before applying the sealant? I've never used this product before so I'm wondering about fillers and bonding issues. Also, how is it on the trim should i get any on it....any issues with staining or white residue? The car is a black cavalier 2005 and i'm wondering if i should just get the meguires step 2 as a final polish before sealant? Thanks in advance.

someone on this baord did it. Its not made to be used as a whole car application but I guess it will work. I know its gums up pretty bad on a pc pad.

What color vehicle and what sealant do you have?

ColorX gum up on a PC. . yep.

Whole car application? you could but there is probably some more effective/appealing products.

I get a very clean look from ColorX but really what it does is clean up your scratches/swirls while adding a bit of protection I believe.

If you are using a machine, go to your local Paint and Auto Body Supply (phonebook) and pick up some Meguairs #80 or #7. If you are going the hand route, try some #9. Most of those products will give you some darkening of the paint while "glazing" the defects that weren't removed.

Meguiar's literature says, "It's ideal for quick touch-ups or reviving a car's entire finish", so I guess they must think it would be OK.
I personally wouldn't use it on the entire vehicle but I don't really know why.:) Just doesn't seem like the right product for that use.:dunno

AMD: Sunshine is talking about Scratch-X, not ColorX.
Scratch-X is intended for hand use and really isn't intended to be used with a machine.
ColorX is intended to be used either by hand or by machine.
Have you had a problem with ColorX gumming up a PC pad?

Unless you are using a Meguiar's sealant, I think your combination of products is less than ideal. I think Meguiar's claims that all their products are compatible with each other so you might get away with using their sealant over any of their products. Heavy on the might.

If I were going to use a sealant as my last step, I would use whatever paint cleaner the sealant manufacturer recommended to use before applying their sealant.

Ahhhh. . . Scratch-X! I do recall a few month ago I was using ColorX on a very slightly oxidized, SS Nissan Sentra where it would give me some gumming no matter what changes I made in the process. I was using it on the horizontal surfaces where the paint was in the worst shape. Looking back, I think it was probably just a poor choice for the situation. I have since used it by hand around door handles and such with good results. I think the product is sensitive to heat and breaks down quickly with a PC. Just a guess.

The abrasives in SX are aggressive but very soft and sesnitive to pressure, not heat. The key to using SX effectively is to apply, remove, apply, remove, until the marring is gone. If you use a lot all at once, you waste product. If you use to little, you'll be rubbing product that has already broken down completely.

I like the product but I wouldn't do my whole car with it, and I drive a Miata. It would take a long, long time.

any thoughts on Deep Crystal-step2 from meguires....the stuff you buy from the local WallMart...how does this compare to #9, and any issues with #9 for the trim or application/removal?

As far as the Meg's stuff, you can get very good results with ColorX by hand. You can also get out some of the more noticeable maring by hand with ScratchX, just use it as directed. It's decent stuff for hand use too.

I think the Deep Crystal system and the #9 are two different animals, but I have heard of good results with both.

FWIW, I have never had any problems using ColorX via PC (no gumming, etc), but all the surfaces I have used it on via PC were in good shape to begin with.
