Meguiars Speed Glaze #80 and NXT on metallic silver

Looks great Eric. How's it holding up?

GJ Scott.

I wish I could've helped but I knew I was going to leave early and I hate starting on something I can't finish.

No handle is good for beginners so you can apply more even pressure. Mike was pushing down to show how the PC bogs with too much pressure. Best polishing results are when you use slightly less pressure than it takes to bog down the PC motor...about 5 pounds or so.

I thought this was an interesting approach. It never really even occured to me to try the PC without the handle. On horizontal surfaces, I think I might start using it this way, at least for polishing. It initially seemed odd, but was actually a bit easier as it makes the PC more compact.

I'd also never used as much pressure as they were using. But Mike and Scott were really getting some great results, so that was another PC tip I learned. Basically you can get an idea of how much pressure by leaning on it until the motor gets loud and bogs, then let up until it sounds normal again.

I'm looking forward to having some time to put this into action on my cars, and also to try out my Cyclo that is sitting around. Mike was a real master of the rotary also and has a way of making it look so simple and easy to control. Whenever I use one, you can tell I'm fighting a bit to get it to move in straight lines and where I want it to. Mike made it look like the pad was covered in ball-bearings. It just glided gently wherever he wanted it to. He's a real master. I can't believe I missed the Scottwax vs. PC polishing contest!! Though I did compete in the Scottwax vs PC waxing contest. He waxed about 80% of the side of a car in the time I waxed the other 20%... :o

Gents,

The post is now gone but I asked Mike P. if #80 had protection and it does but only lasts about 30 days. The MSDS list a ploymer.

Cheers,

Eric

Besides the obligatory "nice job, Scottwax", here's a rare chance for me to contribute something about a Meg's product besides #16 :D

#80 *does* have some minor protective qualities. It's a polymer-type protection that doesn't interfere with the curing of fresh paint. Now it's nothing like NXT or a regular wax, but it *is* more protection than SFP or one of the other Meg's glazes can offer.

And that handle-less PC technique isn't just for beginners. I haven't used the side handle since forever.

Aurora40- Heh heh, don't let that Cyclo start feeling neglected ;) And don't hesitate to reall lean on THAT machine. It won't bog down on you. It makes for a great intermediary step between your rotary work and the final finishing with the PC.

OMG!!! I actually found somthing wrong with Scottwax's work!!! He didn't do the tail pipes! just playing with ya ...LMAO!

I've been using #80 all spring, and really like the results. It wets and darkens the paint, and makes a good base for your favorite sealant. I've topped it with UPP on two vehicles and they both looked great. On pewter colored paint with moderate swirls, #80 took out about 80% of the swirls with just one application using an orange power pad. I don't know if it filled or actually polished them out -- probably a little of both. It also cleans the paint fairly well, so it's a great choice for doing friends'/relatives' cars when you don't want to spend forever polishing out their swirls.

Dave-you are not kidding about how wet #80 looks! Even in the direct sun, that 350Z looked very wet and in the shade? Definitely going to pick up a gallon next time I am at my distributer. Oh yeah, when you looked at the sun reflected off the hood of the 350Z, it was intense enough to hurt your eyes...no kidding either. I wasn't the only one who couldn't look directly at the sun shining off the paint.

Man you guys up there in the states have all the fun.We dont have anything like that that goes on here:(

i had never given #80 a thought before.....

but having seen it used, and from the post above.....you can see its properties.....it can buff paint mildly leaving a smooth finish(like #82SFP), it has the filling-leveling and darkening (mild) qualities of #81 hand polish.......

this can be a time saver.... then the kicker is it has a mild polymer in it as posted above, which i had never heard before...

Eric-I had help on that car...Mike Phillips, Eric (ERock, the owner), Bob (Aurora40) and a few others joined in on the fun. I certainly cannot take full credit for how amazing the car turned out.

I agree the PC is easy to use sans handle on horizontal surfaces, but I prefer having the handle on when I do the vertical panels.

Good job to everyone who made the 350Z look great.

I started using my PC with the handle, because the first PC I had the screw hole became stripped and I learned to use without the handle.

Eric

Eric-funny thing, after using the PC for several hours (at least it seemed that long!) on Saturday, I took the handle off mine. It is easier to control and now more compact so I can get into tighter places without turning it upside down so the handle doesn't get in the way.

BTW, best thing about how that 350Z turned out? The look on the owner's face. He was just stunned at how completely excellent it looked...and that he now has a very good idea of how to keep it that way.

I also use the PC without the handle. Not only do I find it easier to control and more compact but it also vibrates a lot less when you hold it by the head of the machine instead of the handle.

it was pretty cool watchin scottwax in action......man when i saw him he was WORKIN !.....he didnt get arms that size from sittin on the couch usin the remote control..........again nice to meet everyone......

My #80 finally arrived. I cant wait to use it! I'll try it on my white 00 Taurus first. Even though white is difficult to see GREAT results, its a good product demo car, in real good shape, but has some minor spiderwebbing....

I think i will keep my handle on, i havent had any concerns about tight spots as i just manipulate it upside down or something. I feel a little more control with the handle there, even though I dont use the handle except for the verticals like Scott mentioned.....I pretty much just use one hand, and give slight pressure. Im no where near the 5lbs that Mike had spoke of at Autopia Day. My personal feeling is the machine is heavy enough, and it does heat up to a pretty good temp on its own. And when your doing Suburbans, it can get warm on the hands.....And im talkin WARM.....

I tryed 80 on a robin egg blue car not that impressed. I used NXT over it with a pc set on 4.5. I like the Zaino job on my explorer better. Am I too fussy. I can see little swirls in the clear coat on the blue car. Ya you have to look and most average joes would not see them. But we are no average joes. We are old or current rodders who love cars more then fishing poles. Although I injoy my boat and fishing too. Whiteowl

I can't believe I missed the Scottwax vs. PC polishing contest!! Though I did compete in the Scottwax vs PC waxing contest. He waxed about 80% of the side of a car in the time I waxed the other 20%...

Are you contemplating a rematch? :LOLOL
