Meguiar's Clay Bad Wrap?

I've read quite a few threads that have negative comments on Meguiar's Clay. Having read these I was more than a little nervous to try their Overspray Clay. I like to experiment and decided to try it none the less.

Let me first say that I've tried a number of the popular clays in the past. I've used Mother's, Clay Magic and Griot's. I've had good success with all of these products though I thought Griot's was a little pricey. I've never been one to use soap or wash water as my lubricant. I usually end up using Mother's Detailers Mist as my lubricant.

The comments that I have read are that Meguiar's Overspray Clay is that it is soft/sticky and tends to smear/streak. With this in mind I decided that I would use Meguiar's Final Detail as my lubricant. Many of the comments that I have read and my experience with FD is that it's quite slick. That being the case I thought these two products might be a good match.

Using this combination the clay worked out very well. In fact, it may be the best I've used to date. When I say best I mean good cleaning/plucking characteristics with little effort. This process doesn't usually take me too long to complete a vehicle but I actually did my SuperCrew F-150 in about 15 minutes using these products. This is quite a bit faster than normal. When I tried Griot's product I ordered their D/A Orbital compatible pad to apply it. I've also used their product by hand. I'm sure when I did this by machine it took me longer than 15 minutes.

I'm just rambling here but I have found Meguiar's Overspray Clay to be a decent product and I think that this combination is worth a try. Just my 2 cents.

Are you sure the negative comments you found are not referring to Meguiar's consumer line "quik clay", and not the overspray clay?

I think most of the negative comments I have read have been about the Quik Clay. It smears and sticks to the paint leaving an awful mess on the paint.

The negative comments about the overspray clay is that it is too abrassive for regular detailing. It is made for overspray. I would be careful using this stuff it would easily marr the paint.

I have used Clay Magic, Mothers, 3M, Megs Quik Clay, and the Oversray Clay. The Mothers clay is the best IMO.

I looked through a number of pages of posts using the search feature and saw a lot of bad press on both Meguiar's Quick Clay and Overspray Clay. That was there reason for my comment in my first post.

I called and spoke with Paul (Meguiar's Sales Rep) about the relative abrasiveness of Meguiar's clay's. He told me that the Overspray Clay (white) was very easy on paint. He indicated that their yellow and red formula's were progressively more abrasivie. I may have got the wrong information here but it wasn't that I didn't ask. I didn't notice any aggresive cut to it.

Maybe we could get Mr. Phillips to jump in here and straighten me out.:nixweiss

I looked into this a little further, Meguiar's Proffesional Product Guide advertises their Overspray Clay as 100% non-abrasive - safe for all paints. Using FD as a lubricant it sure didn't seem to have any cutting action when I used it. :)
