Meguiar's #34 As A Clay Lube

I have a claying to do next week. I also have 3 bottles of Final Inspection laying around.

Has anyone ever used #34 as a lubricant for claying? Does it work OK? To do a 2010 Camry, will 3 bottles suffice?

jmsc- I've used it and it worked sorta-OK, but it wasn't what I'd call ideal.

Three bottles oughta be enough to clay a garage-full of Suburbans, let alone one little Camry! Well, OK, I'm exaggerating, but not by much.

jmsc:

Megs #34 (Final Inspection) is what I used with Clay Magic Blue Clay after I ran out of the small spray bottle of Clay lube (AutoMagic's equivalent of their #49 Body Shine) that came with the kit I bought at Advanced Auto. I use this because a well-respected person on this forum did not like using Optimum's No-Rinse (ONR) carwash diluted for clay lube use. He felt that Meg's #34was a better lube, in his opinion. The clay lube that comes with the kit works very well with the blue clay, as I would expect. But #34 is a good substitute.

If you use too much clay lube, (yes ,there is such a thing) then the clay "tackiness" will not pick up all the imbedded contaminates in the clearcoat/paint. Too little lube OR a lube that has no good lubrication properties (Like plain distilled or ionize water) will cause the clay to stick to the paint and you risk the chance of scatching/marring the surface, plus it's a pain to get off. You'll have to gain this experience by trial-and-error. You don't have to press hard and it's better to use too much lube than not enough (Thank you Captian Obvious for that observation!)

As far as 3 bottles lasting, I use about 3-to-4 ounces from a 16-ounce spray bottle of Megs #34 to do my Subaru Outback, which means you should be able to do this about 15-to-12 times to your Camry with your three bottles. However, as the famed Accumulator will say, "Your mileage may vary" (YMMV).

Oh yah, save your spray nozzle when the bottle is empty. If you ever drop your bottle of #34 and break or crack the trigger handle OR pull the trigger handle when the nozzle is closed too tightly and break it, you'll have a spare to replace it with. (Speaking from experience)

#34 is my favorite clay lube. I find it works great.

Never heard of anybody diluting it. Might make for in interesting experiment. But I wouldn't dilute a whole bottle to begin with. I'd suggest starting with just a few ounces to see how you like it first.

Looks like with 3 16oz bottles I won't have to dilute it. I just want to use them up.

One advantage to using #34 is that I won't have to wash the car a 2nd time since its really a QD and not an auto shampoo.

Accum - you say not "ideal". What products are ideal in your opinion? I ask 'cause I keep getting asked what are some of the BEST products for certain situations.

I kinda like having it around for gentle cleaning of lightly (well, very lightly) soiled delicate surfaces, and for use when buffing off compoun/polish residues (never use M105 without it).

It might not clean well enough for that, just see how it goes.

90% of my claying is just very gentle "claying the LSP clean" with Sonus SFX clay, and with that clay I use their Glyde lube pretty much exclusively. It's very "soapy" so I do a rewash/rinse afterwards.

On the rare occasions I do a "regular claying" I use the hard-to-find Smart Clay, usually with ClayMagic brand lube or the Glyde.

For a more normal-person recommendation, I'd just say to use ClayMagic Blue clay with their lube or the DuraGloss shampoo.

It saves money diluting a QD (for claying only). I much rather use it for more specific tasks, but that is just me.

IMHO #34 Is a very good QD. It has good cleaning qualities on a slightly dusted auto. On my garage queen I follow it up with Z-8....

I think you'll be fine with #34. I would use full strength myself . It's not like its overly expensive and I would rather have more lubrication than not.

I use #34 for clay lube now. I like Last Touch better as it's slicker and more cost effective. However, LT is too slick and tape will not stick to trim after using it unless you wash the car or wipe it down with IPA. I tried ONR but it doesn't have much lubricity and seem to marr the paint more. I've tried a few others and keep coming back to #34.
