Me Vs Black 99 GTP

Ok so the GTP is winning. I am just starting out on the hood and a can't get the swirl marks out. Round two and Im getting ready to head out for round three.

It was a good battle but the swirl marks did me in. Here is what I am working with

Wash

Clay

Wash

ssr2.5 via orange tropicare pad

ssr1 via black torpicare finishing pad

topper (natty's or pinnacle)

Right now I am stuck on the hood. I wash and clayed the hood and then starting using my PC that I just got. I don't want to move on until Im happy with no swirls. I polished a 2X2 section for 30 minutes today in the garage. Moved it out in the sunlight and all the swirls are still there. I have a picture that I will post.

I am going real slow. Overlapping my passes and applying a 8" trail of ssr2.5 right where the scratches are. Working it in at a speed of 3-4 and then bumping it up to 5-6 as polish breaks down. Ive seen pics of really bad swirls being removed with an orange pad and ssr2.5 so I don't know what Im doing wrong. The paint on the hood is not original. Its been repainted last year so the swirls are moderate but not to terrible. I think I should be able to get them out with the ssr2.5.

Anyone have any suggestions. I really want to win and knock the swirls out. Then I can do the whole car and seal with Zaino and top with pinnacle and be done with it for a few months.

I will try to get some pics so you can see what Im working with. Im about to go into the garage and do battle again. I will let you know how I do.

Here is a pic. I worked on a small section for 15 minutes. I broke out a new pad, its yellow medium cutting pad from tropicare.com. Worked it with ssr2.5. Hopefully I just need to work it in more or grab some ssr3.

Here is a pic of what Im battling. Is my paint terribly hard or do these marks just not come out??

They don't resemble finger catchers so they should come out. I would speed up the PC and slowly work the areas in question. It is very difficult to get black perfect, so I would recommend you get the paint to a point where you are satisfied and then grab the RMG. It's a real life saver on daily driven black autos.

Turn off the halogen lamp. Done :grinno:

Just kidding. Your process seems right on target. However I’d pursue a bit more cutting action with the yellow pad. Give yourself a 2 x 2 area and focus solely on the scratches. Though I’ll be the first to admit that I do not use a PC for correction . . . take more time or use a combination of lighter polishes and glaze. Good luck.

I have the same issue. I was able to knock down 95% of the marring, but there is just that last bit that won't come out. I even tried some SSR3 to no avail. In the end I did what J.J suggested and hit it with some RMG which *really* works wonders. I know they are still there, but you can't see them and you only need to re-apply every few weeks.

Thanks for the reply guys. Yeah I know that halogen light sucks. It was the only big light I had.

What is RMG? Red machine glaze? I think I saw some on Scotts website. I might have to try that. I will have to admit though that polishing with the ssr's really brought out a nice depth to the paint. I can already tell that the paint will look a whole lot better with it polished.

I did a few cars before this one with the PC and had good results. I polished my sisters black Xterra and it came out really nice. I will post pics of that. I even had black paint on the orange pad so I know it was working. It cut the swirls right out on some places. But for some reason I can't get the swirls out of the hood on either cars although they are greatly diminished.

I guess I will take the yellow and orange pad and go to work until I am happy with it and then hit it with RMG and top it off with nattys and be done with it.
