Matte Paint Care / Surface Scratch Removal

So I have a vehicle with Matte black paint. I was looking for advice on how to take care of the paint and remove surface scratches when they arrive. I have only seen a couple of reviews for Matte Paint products. As It is a Motorcycle I was hoping for a spray cleaner as apposed to a bucket wash. Would Megs D114 work for that? Has anyone used the Dr. Beasly's Matte Paint products? How about the Chemical Guys Matte products?

I have read very little about the Chemical Guys here on the forums and they received good marks from mjlinane has anyone else used the products?

Is the Permanon Super Matte worth the price? Has any one used this?

I have been looking a sealers for my Matte paint and have ran across Swissvax Opaque wax, Chemical guys Jet Seal Matte, and the real expensive Permanon Super Matte. Anyone actually used any of these or similar products?

Sorry for all the questions, I did not realize that taking care of Matte paint would be so different, because of the dull finish.


Any advice on surface scratch removal?

I can't answer any of your questions, I'm sorry. However, what I can do is send you a 50ml sample of permanon super-matte (as long as you're in the lower 48). PM me your name and address and I'll send it your way
 
Much like we wash we wash gloss paint in a safe manner to avoid scratches (abrasion) you will want to wash your matte paint in an equally safe manner to avoid abrading the surface and increasing the gloss.

As far as which products are safe, avoid anything that is abrasive, has chemical cleaners or is designed to increase the shine.

I have used both Permanon Matte and the Chemical Guys Matte products and both work great. I have also used BLACKFIRE Crystal Seal with great success, although I would suggest an inconspicuous spot for that first.

As far as scratch repair, a repaint is the only way.
 
and to add to what Todd said just avoid anything with gloss enhancers which is a lot of consumer grade products

So you have used the "Permanon Super Matte" and the Chemical Guys Jet Seal Matte"? Which did you like better?

As far as scratches, that is what I thought. What about scuffs? Like when something is rubbed on the paint and it leaves a discolored area? Or really small surface scratches. Will any of the above products get rid of these and aid in protecting against them?

I've never used it, I received it as a promo with one of my many orders. I've got all glossy paint. It's just sitting and collecting dust on my shelf
 
Something else you might want to consider ...

I haven't used that product from Chemical Guys's

What I have used is their Meticulous Matte Detailer and Meticulous Matte Wash.

The detailer worked like most other detailers, excellent at removing dust/light finger prints and it didn't add gloss.

The auto wash was rich and sudsy and seemed to rinse away easily. For a matte wash soap, it really is a good option.

I used the Permanon Super-Matte to seal the paint (and the Chemical Guy's to wash/detail it). Permanon is very easy to use (spray on, blast off) and creates intense water beading. I found the Matte version to similar to there other products, but it didn't impart a gloss.

I would recommend all three, as well as some soft microfiber towels and good wash materials to maintain your paint.


In regards to a scuff, keep in mind its all relative.

Let's say glossy paint has a gloss of 100
Matte paint has a gloss of 10

When you scuff a surface, you usually alter the surface texture slightly, which changes the gloss rating. Let's say a scuff creates a gloss of 30.

That means when you scuff glossy paint, the new texture looks dull. When you scuff matte paint, the smoother surface actually becomes smoother (as the flattening agents are polished) and you seen an increase in gloss.

In this case, you would likely have to repaint.

Interesting! I would think that Crystal Seal would attempt to make the matte shiny. I assume that it didn't. I ask because I am interested in a sealant to use on the "pipe" style running boards on my truck which are not technically matte, but they aren't really shiney either. Do you think Crystal Seal would be a good bet on those boards?
 
I really like Permanon Super Matte. Truly believe is the best way to protect matte paint. Easy to apply with minimal abrasion/risk to the paint. Lasts a couple of months and makes the following washes so much easier. Beads like mad and allows for easy drying with a MetroVac or leaf blower. If applied with an air compressor/detail spray gun, the 0.5l will last a really long time.

Oh, don't believe anything that mjlinane guy writes. He is an idiot. ;)

While Matte paint does have a certain 'cool factor', it's not a popular choice amongst detailers. There's not a lot that you can do with it. It will only look worse as more time passes by. Now that you've been semi-educated your paint is only going to drive you :crazy2: Trade you car for one with real paint is my final suggestion

Basically... Lambroghini makes you sign a waiver if you get one of their matte finish paint options which basically read that you will not be able to keep it matte forever and they will not repair it.
 
One last tidbit of info
Lambroghini won't let you take delivery of one of their natte vehicles w/out 1st signing a waiver. What this basically means is that they do not approve of this method of painting
 
Porsche also. Client with the matte AMG in my reviews wanted a $$$$ SUV in matching matte black. Porsche said no - even at price no object. BMW and MB also could not deliver. (She went with a "normal" black AMG GL63.)
 
Porsche thinks so little of matte finishes that they won't offer it even if it means loss of sales
