Makita - Maintenance

Besides changing the carbon brushes on your Makita rotaries, do you guys perform any other maintenance work on it?

2 of my old 3yr old Makitas have started making a faint "klack, klack" sound.

Seems to emanate from the 'head" of the machine. Any ideas? Bearings, armature, gears??? I've bought new ones, but am looking to repair these 2 old ones, if they are repairable at all.

Any advice would be most appreciated:dance

Other than rotating the brushes, fix em when they break. Good idea to upgrade to a longer cord. Just go to Home Depot and cut one in.

Mine "clacks" when the carbon brushes need changing, I know you mentioned that but if you haven't done it recently it's the first thing I'd try. Aside from that the almost required longer/high grade cord, I've not done anything to mine in the time I've owned it.

I was getting gear slap on my makita, I needed to change out the gears. One of the gears is attached to the armature so the whole process cost 125$. I changed the brushed, and added a longer and larger gage cord, its now brand new. Not bad for a machine 4 yrs old.

Cheers,

GREG

Yeah....my Makita is having this gear slap too. I think it's called the bevel spiral gear. Not cheap.

Will get it replace, and relegated to back-up/emergency duty...cos I've bought another new 9227C to replace it.

Many thanks to every one here for their advice!
