Major car makers agree to make automatic braking standard in US

Interestingly enough you listed Volkswagen first on something that's highly software related. Probalby a good move.

No thanks, I'd like to retain full control of my car please. I gotta wonder the more we go down this forced nanny technology trail if more and more people will choose to try and make their older cars last

I have automated braking as well as automated parking on the new jeep. When that stuff kicks in it scares the crap out of you but it could save your life. I am all for new safety tech getting into the hands of all drivers.

This should make for some great drivers and road side conversations. Way to many people text and drive now as it is you go and give them auto braking systems and think they wont use that to be able to pay less attention to the road? Then after they hit some one they will just blame the auto brake didn't work and want to blame the manufacturer.

This should increase the price of a new vehicle a few more thousand. The more bells and whistles the higher the price. Zager and Evans the year 2525 song in 1969 is coming closer all the time.

Couple of sorta-random thoughts follow:

-Nah, such a system could never malfunction or require tricky servicing...
-Nah, nobody'll think "OK, I can pay even less attention now!"

But here's a couple OTOH:

-The vast majority of drivers take several seconds to react to anything and then they do the wrong thing anyhow
-The vast majority of drivers have zero idea of how to operate their ABS optimally

I have a friend with auto breaking and she hates it. Apparently on really curvy roads it sees cars going the other way and slams on the brakes. She said it almost caused a crash a few times last winter in the snow and ice.

Feel sorry for the drunks out there, the car slams it's brake and they go flying out the front windshield........:o

In 50 years cars are going to be electric and driverless. You can't stop technology. I am still waiting for those flying cars though!

OYE, yet another good but bad thing. My car has adaptive cruise control, many times it decides to slam on the brakes because a bottle or bag whisps by. I will say the collision detection system saved a SWAN on the freeway once. Driving talking hands free at night after the a rainstorm, system starts beeping, I look down the freeway. A GIANT SWAN standing in between lanes! Give me the ability to turn it off please.
