Hello Guys & Gals:

I would like some advice, I am a old hat at detailing but willing to learn new tricks .

My wife recenltly purched a black Clear coat 1992 Mercedes-Benz 300-E. all orginal paint. The paint looks fine but with the car cover and occasional carefull hand washes and drying . Certain fine micro scratching is prevailant to occure.

I just purchased the Sonus swirl buster polish and orange foam pad ,but am concerned this might bee too abrasive for the paint?

I would like to know what other polishes out their are one step machine or hand that I can apply a carnauba paste wax to and get a deep rich wet gloss to.

The german paint for my year automobile is very soft as some of use with BMW andother German cars now. and it becoves a challenge to keep these cars from looking beat up.

I coul also use some help in the way of 6inch foam pads close and open cell technology . who makes the leading pads today . I like Meguires foam pads , however I have read about lake country and some others pads. What is the low down on foam Pad technology and who makes the best ones for compounding ,polishing and waxing and glazing?

One very important items to add to this mix of questions. I have a VS Polisher and A Dewalt 7424 I use the rotory polishes more because I feel more comforable with polising a low speed 1000- 1500. I would like to fine products and pads that respond well to rotory polishers and the Dewalt 7424 . but most important need the skimmy on what is happening with this technology, since the introduction of harder clears.

Thank You so much for any help you can give.

Swirlbuster isn't all that agressive, cut seems about on par with Optimum Polish, which you can use quite often and not worry about excessive CC removal.

Bob,

I feel the best pads on the market are the Lake Country. The only problem is the finishing pads are 90ppi. The company who mfg's the sonus pads and the new meg's pads has a white very soft finishing pad that is 100ppi closed cell. Works excelent as a final polish. Not to sure how it will respond with the swirl buster polish. I sure it will work fine. If not you can uuse it with the Optimum polish.

If you want a hand or machine product that will give you great gloss, no dust and act as a final polish all in one order the Optimum Poli-Seal. I think an old hat as your self will enjoy useing it.

These products I use at my Auto Recon shop and use because of proformance and durability. I also detail lots of BMW's old and new.

You can not go wrong with Optimum products. I personally like Pro Wax's pads; especially the waffle ones. I use the 8.5 inch pads though on my Metabo.

Bob G- In my experience the clear on Benzes of that vintage isn't all *that* soft or thin, not like it was a few years earlier when they first switched to lacquer-based b/c for their metallics. Still, it does pay to be careful.

1Z Metallic PolishWax was *designed* for thin, fragile clears and might be just what you're after. It works fine by rotary/dual-action/hand and is *very* user-friendly. Quite mild, and even leaves a little wax protection behind. It's what I'd try first, though that Menzera stuff (or the Blackfire version) and Optimum are good choices too. The 1Z Metallic would, IMO, be the mildest approach (maybe even too mild).

The orange Sonus pad *might* be a bit aggressive for that paint, I'd use a regular polishing pad and see if that's aggressive enough. IIRC people have had some issues with that pad leaving micromarring but I don't remember for sure and I'd hate to denigrate an OK pad.

FWIW and just *in my experience* most quality pads from reputable manufacturers work fine. There are personal preferences but it's not like LC pads (which I use) or Meguiar's pads (which I also use) or Sonus pads (which I also use) or [more examples] have a monopoly on good results ;)

I agree with Ron. Poli-Seal will work great to keep any light defect at bay between deep polishing sessions. You can maintain it with Optimum Car Wax or top with a carnauba.

I second the Einszett recommendation, very easy to work with, very safe and effective, either by hand or machine.

Is the new Meg pad 100ppi? I know that SM arnold have a white 100ppi pad. Are they the manufacturer for the new meg pads?

Meg #66 can be used as a polish or a one step has filliers in it but will work great with your pad top with Meg #26 Good luck
