Luggage Rack Cleaner

Hey Guys,

I'm a newbie here. After finding this site, I was relieved as I thought I was the only wierdo out there washing my 2002 Excursion after getting a drop of salt or dirt on it!! :getdown

This car is my first new car and I want to take care of it. The undercarriage is near perfect and I wax and wax all of the time. The interior is mint (except a scratch) from a dogs gripping nails after a hard stop so I would not hit a deer.

My question is I just waxed the roof of my Ex and I noticed the luggage rack is fading from a black to a whitish black to gray color. Unfortunately, the Ex will not fit in my garage and it has to stay outside all year. I live in Lexington, KY so it is not too bad. What are some products I could use to beautify my luggage racks up with?

Welcome to Autopia! The first thing I would try is Poorboy's Trim Restorer: after this soaks in buff it off with a MF (micro fiber towel).

Some members have good luck with Klasse AIO on trim, but I haven't tried it on faded black trim myself.

You'll get a lot of other suggestions, but if all of the *easy* stuff fails to darken it back up you might have to dye it with something like Forever Black.

Something else you might want to try is a gentle cleaning with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser just to make sure you're not dealing with wax residue. They are pretty cheap and you can pick them up at Wal-Mart.

youns- Welcome to Autopia!

Nice to hear you're taking such good care of your Excursion..wish more people cared about their undercarriages the way you do :xyxthumbs

The roof racks of different vehicles are made of differing materials, and I've never worked on a Ford. The stuff on my Chevy Blazer cleaned up nicely with 1Z paint polish topped with Collinite wax, and it was grayish-white/chalky when I started. Some materials like this have cleaned up well for me with the AIO, but if that works OK I'd put some KSG on top of it to provide some long-term protection. The basic problem sounds like oxidation from exposure to the elements, so some protection would be helpful.

I'm not a big fan of using dressings on parts like this as they can run/etc. in the rain. But Autoglym's Bumper Care is *MUCH* better than most such products in this regard and I'd use that if other, more "paint like" approaches like the AIO don't work out.

Dude, this is starting to get alittle werid. Someone just said they are from pikeville ky on MOL which is only 30min from where I live. Im going to school at EKU and now someone on here is within 20min of me! Crazy!

Anyway, I used Meguiars All season dressing on my door handles after they started to fade some and they look better than new! Even after washing it and driving in the rain they look good. Didnt notice any running what so ever either.. I let it sit over night in the garage before driving it in the rain though...

These garage roofs are all too low. Fortunately I own a Yakima roof rack that can be easily unmounted.
