Lint or something else

I dont post very often but i have a question and need some help. My wife had to bring her 2012 Honda Pilot (black) to the dealer to get something fixed and without asking, they washed the car. Damage wasnt terrible but bad enough where it needs to be polished out. I washed the car with ONR and polised with a white pad and menz sf 106, sealing with Blackfire. I just removed the sealant and there appears to be what looks like lint all over the car. :bawling:

I've read that it could be the towels but it wasnt there when I remove the menz and did a alcohol wipedown. Could it be I used too much sealant? It does seem to be streaking when removing the sealant. I'm attaching a picture but it didnt come out too well. I have more polishing to do so I'm planning on washing the entire car again. Thoughts?

'Lint' can only be from frangible fibres from a towel or cloth.

Are the towels you're using new and what are your washing/drying methods?

I wish there were better pictures.

From what I can barely see, it may be another concern, but who knows at this point.

If it's lint you should be able to move it around, like...with your fingerip.

I've never used the Menzerna sealant, but most sealants do need to be applied very sparingly.

I've had issues with the oils in Menzerna's 106 polishes, so I always do a thorough job of stripping them before I apply my LSP. And by "thorough" I don't mean IPA ;) but maybe it worked OK for you.

Thanks guys. I can move the lint around so thats what I think it is. Accumulator, the sealant is Blackfire and it could be the oils in the Menz polish as it does seem to leave an oily residue when I ran my finger over it. I'm finishing the car tomorrow so I'll see what it yields. The towels are from CG and I always wash in machine cold with Woolite and hang dry - never in the dryer. Here is an attempt at a better pic but its very hard to capture on a black car. At least the free dealer installed scratches are gone.

If you can move it around, it must be lint. Try doing a small section on your window. Might be time for some new MF towels. BTW those scratches are called DISO, dealer installed swirl option.

Looks like residue from mf towels? I have had this problem before with new towels, especially ones that are not super high quality. If the polish does not remove, possibly try claying?

jswift2000- Just thinking out loud here...one time when I applied UPP (perhaps not all that different from BF) over top of something it didn't like (IIRC it was consumer line 1Z MP) I got weird oily effects that I could manipulate with my finger but couldn't quite buff away.

Between the ?MF lint? and the ?polishing oils? I'd think we've narrowed it down.

Oh, and just FWIW, I have to use much more, uhm....aggressive laundering on my MFs; if I washed them in cold with Woolite they'd never come close to really being clean. And I do much better when I machine-dry them too, they seem better at that "grabby" behavior that I suspect helps get oils/etc. off. Just mentioning it in case something as simple as changing your laundry routine might effect some big improvement.

JMSC - the dealership was curtiss ryan in Shelton, CT and they are a good dealership. When we bought the car in Jan the did a great job of prepping the car. However, my wife to bring it in for something and they assumed she wanted a wash :noidea:. I never let anyone what my cars... needless to say I flipped out a little bit. Oh well.

Accumulator, I finished the majority of the car today and some linting but not as bad. I just did a final wipe down with a different MF and it seemed to take care of the issue. I'm going to purchase some MF cleaning solution. I used sf 4000 on white and topped with BFWD. Looks nice on black. I would have posted some final pics but the rain came as I finished cleaning up. No big deal.

jswift2000- Glad you're getting it sorted out. Yeah, see what, if any, diff you experience with more aggressive laundering.

Having the same linting problem with my Packshak and Chemical Guys MF's. Driving me nuts!!!!

I wash in Woolite and hang dry.

Maybe time for new MF's...I ended up using my cheap-o MF's on my car today because I just couldn't get rid of the lint...

Wonder if machine-drying would help any. Just thinking how the lint from *cotton* towels sure gets caught in the dryer's lint filter.
