Light scratches, Help.

Flat-6

Just purchased a 2003 e46 bmw, its jet black and I will be doing a full detail theis weekend. The paint is in pretty good condition, save a few light to possibly medium-light scratches. I currently have a pc and griots #3 polish, as that is all I have needed for my cars. I dont have time to get anything mail order, but I do have access to a place that carrys quite a bit of the professional megs. products. Would dacp #83 or fine cut #2 be a good solution? or possibly one of the 3M products? I know...... pics would help but I am thinking that the griots #3 polish is not going to get out these defects. Would I need to use dacp/ fine cut #2 on the entire car or could I just use it for spot treatments and use the other for the rest of the swirls and such? thanks......

I agree that you'll need something more aggressive than the Griot's #3, that's awfully mild stuff by PC (Griot's stuff is more aggressive by Cyclo though).

If you can still find them, my go-to products are 3M PI-III RC (05933) and MG (05937). Those will probably do it all, but a follow-up with the Griot's #3 might be interesting. My local autobody/paint supply place still has them on the shelf so call around.

If you use the #83 go over it with something like #80 afterwards as the #83 will almost certainly leave micromarring that I'd expect to be too much for the Griot's #3. Ditto for the #2, and if you get that *MAKE SURE* that you get the new, reforumulated version that's OK to use without a rotary. As best I can tell the new version of #2 and #83 are quite similar but I haven't tried the new #2 (and I'm not a fan of #83).

You could try using the more aggressive products on only the worst of the marring (the deep scratches) but I'd use the follow-up product on the whole car before switching to the Griot's #3.

If you have any Griot's Machine Polish #2 you could try that for the follow-up instead.

Well here goes.

I have used #83 on my black Hemi and have noticed minimal or no marrinig. What marring shows up is easly removed with #80 or #82.

#83 and #80 are my products of choice if I have to remove swirls or scratches. I apply both products with a pc and a polishing pad. If it's really tough stuff I use a cutting pad.
