License plate paranoia

I ask my customers if they want their license plates blocked out if I posted pictures of their car on the internet. If they say yes, I block them out. Simple as that.

When driving around, one's license plate blends in with the crowd, as long as the driver does nothing to attract attention. But when a picture of a license plate is exposed on the Internet, it gives a thief (or a snoop) a chance to do evil. Thus, I block out my license plates.

So it would just make that "Testarosa or Lambo" easier to locate and then go steal it? Is there a sight on the web where you can look up DMV registrations by license plate?

I'm a bit concerned where this thread is going. The reason for blocking out license plates is pretty obvious ... getting into the finer points of identity theft etc should be a red flag to delete a post or at the very least, lock it.

At the end of the day, does it really matter whether people choose to display their plate or not, it really doesn't make a difference in looking at pictures of auto detailing.

Everything is available very easily and cheaply (or free) if you know where to look. I try to do everything possible to prevent (or make it more difficult) for my personal information to be located.

ok, ok, nuf said, I did not mean to wind anyone up. I guess some people just don't want their car posted with their licence plates on it. Personal Preference

I would think someone from Jersey would understand that :D Isn't Newark the stolen car capital of the USA. BTW, my company HQ is in Bridgewater

Someone on another site posted pics of a super riced out Accord they saw driving by in Houston, complete with the license plate. Within the hour, the owner's personal information was posted in the thread. Name, address, etc.

Some people are just being safe. But for those of you who don't care go ahead and post your drivers license # along with social security # and address. For kicks put in a copy of your birth certificates. Thought so jackrabbits.

It's kinda like putting your name on your mailbox in front of your house. If someone wants to see if you are home they can use a phone book and match your name with your address and then call on the phone to see if you are away so that they can break in.

Similarly, if someone doesn't like one of your posts for whatever reason and lives near you all he has to do is recognize the license plate of your car and start mischief making.

I would not like some hothead that just flamed me to know which car is mine.

I don't cover my plates but my customer plates i do unless they say otherwise. I just see it as it's not my call to decide if they want they stuff on the web at all, wether it be their car or their license plate.

my insurance dropped about $80p/month moving from Phoenix to Michigan I was informed 85013 zip code (central phoenix) was the highest stolen car area.
