Leather wrapped steering wheel

The steering wheel in my vehicle is leather wrapped. It looks like leather, but feels like there might be a vinyl protective coating or something. Do manufacturers do this when leather is used on the steering wheel, or is it just dried out from neglect? What's the best approach to clean the steering wheel and replace the soft, supple feel? Thanks for the help

just use soapy water and a rag to clean it. You don't want to apply cleaners to it since it will make the stearing wheel slick. no point in having a clean stearing wheel if you lose control of you car.

I used Vinylx on my stearing wheel once (just the residue after cleaning the rest of the car) and I had to be really careful turning for the next few days until the slickness wore off.

I've been using Meguiar's Gold Class Leather Cleaner and Conditioner on my steering wheel and shift knob and notice no slipping, it's just soft as the day it came from the dealer. I make sure to wipe any left over conditioner off completely.

You might want to try Griot's Leather Care. It keeps the leather in my car looking new and it's not to slick. (Smells like leather too!)

Cheers,

I use lexol pH cleaner and a very light application of Z10 on my steering wheel with good results..... seems to stay soft and smooth, and not slip at all on me.

The reason your leather wheel seems plastic coated is likely because it is spray dyed. The color is sprayed on a thin film and then covered with something (usually like vynil)... the other type is vat-dyed and they soak the leather in the dye... ususally only on German products.

303 works great on the steering wheel. I just work it in and then buff it to a dry matte finish. Looks like new and no sticky or slick feeling. :xyxthumbs
