Leather steering wheel issue...help!

I clean and condition my leather steering wheel on my 2001 Trans Am pretty reguarly. I was hoping by reguarly doing this it would keep the leather looking new. i use Lexol cleaner and Lexol conditioner. The leather is starting to form almost bubbles like it will tear in one small section on the 12 o'clock portion of the wheel. I never even have my hands on this position. Is there anything I can use or try differently to stop this or correct this?

Perhaps the leather is just getting old. But more than likely your problems are coming from the frequency and vigor that you clean your leather. It's very possible to over clean your leather hence deteriorating it. Also, how hard are you scrubbing when you clean it? You really only need to clean your leather about two maybe three times year. And during those cleanings, don't try to scrub too hard. Use gentle pressure and let the cleaner do it's job. And, although lexol isn't horrible, there are much better cleaner and conditioners out there. I use zaino z9 to clean the leather and z10 to condition it. It works great and smells fantastic. Townsend is another leather cleaner that is very highly regarded. Good luck!

My old Momo steering wheel did the same thing. I was told by Momo, that it was to be expected. since that's where my hands would sit whilst driving.

There is not way to repair it, other than having the wheel re-wrapped.

Sorry!

Is it similar to how leather will sometimes wear off and peel up on leather shift knobs? Since it's at the 12 o'clock position I think maybe sunlight is an issue, but there has to be some other underlying problem.

That's a pity. I cleaned mine with four star leather cleaner gel and use wolfgang tire gel on it regularly (monthly) with no problems at all and better than new despite it's 8 years old

tire gel on your leather? :hairpull

I would calm down on the cleaning personally. I have a leather wrapped steering wheel in my 94 Mustang and it is PERFECT after 12 years. As long as you don't have nasty things on your hands I think it will stay in pretty good shape. I never put ANYTHING on my steering wheel just because I don't like it on my hands.

Maybe your an aggressive driver and your stretching it? LOL

:shocked Why!? It doesn't do anything but make it shiny and make your hands greasy.

I keep a fresh coat of Z10 on my steering wheel, shift knob, and parking brake lever. By fresh, I mean about twice a month. It has no cleaning ability, so it's just to replenish oils and keep it nice and supple.

It's worked so far on 6 or 7 vehicles with no ill effects.

I clean my wheel regularly....I have to...my dry skin (psoriasis) dries out the leather and I can't grip a dry non-moisturized wheel....

luckily, on my Infiniti, most of the wheel is wood so I don't have this problem

Actually no grease at all. It does sound shocking but it works

Same stuff is on my door skins and dash.
