OK I'm falling in love with a new Miata. Can't decide on a color though.

Two questions:

Some colors list "clearcoat" in the paint name, such as black clearcoat. Does this mean the other colors do not have a clearcoat?

Does anyone have an opinion on the Miata paint quality? I'm hearing bad rumors.

I believe all new cars now come with at least 1 coat of clearcoat, so that new Miata you're considering should have a clearcoat.

When I was used to shop for a sports car, I did see some early 90s Miata with bad paint jobs, but I believe that was neglect from their owners. You should be alright with a new 01 or 02 Miata.

BTW, I saw an 01 or 02 silver one today, and it sure looked nice with those curves.

I remember reading somewhere that Miatas do not have clear coat on some colors. This may have been incorrect but Man it popped up in my mind so may be worthy of a search or ask the dealer ship.

You also may want to find a Miata Forum and see what the owners say.

Good Luck

Sure, some cars do have bad paint jobs. I hear that Acura Type-S owners are mad that they can't get thier car to shine but I look at their cars and I doubt that, the shine is really nice.

All of the Miata's I have seen that have had bad paint jobs are from sitting in the sun or not being taken care of... just maintain your car and your fine.

People have been telling me about how easy the Miata paint chips and the front bumper and hood take a beating. I just called Miata corp and they told me the three colors I'm interested in do have clearcoat though not labeled.

Hmmmmm.....

The yellow is quite vivid

The black is classy

The silver is stately

The crystal blue metallic grows on ya

The red is classic.

Don't know what to do.

Mazdas may chip easy, i don't think they use an Anti-Chip primer, I know ford doesn't. It's not the paint that's the problem with Mazdas finishes it's how they are applied, to thin film build or a lack of UV blockers. Most of today's paints are just about the same, there are only three major manufacturers of automotive paint's DuPont, PPG and BASF.

As long as you care for your cars finish it will look good for a very long time.

No, Klasse would not provide any noticable protection against chipping. A clear bra, however, will.

Do a search on "Scotchcal" or "XPEL" or go to www.xpel.com. Good luck!

There is a guyover on 6speedonline looking for a detailer in the Sarasota, Fl area. Anyone around there look it up and good luck. I hope this is OK to post as I am not affiliated with 6sppedonline other than a member of the forum.
