Latex roof paint contamination

Tried a search for this but nothing specific came up. I've got a black Jeep Wrangler to do with white specs of latex roofing paint on the hood and front fenders. I need some advice from someone who has been there and done this. I have thought of: Mineral spirits, clay bar, compound, fingernails (doesn't work),....

I know that we usually try the most conservative and then work our way up to aggressive.

What techniques, what products, in what order, would you try?? :nixweiss

Thanks.

Well, the good news is you have a 'black and white' set of circumstances. I recently did a white car with white epoxy road paint. :)

Your best tools will be:

A three step chemical bath (like ValuGard's A-B-C system)

Clay Bar (most brands offer two strengths, have both on hand.)

Tip: clay during the application of the "B" alkaline neutralizer, rinse the bar with water often.

Plastic razor blade to mechanically 'chip' the overspray.

Citrus based detergents (like wheel cleaner) may help; be sure to allow plenty of dwell time.

Solvents. Dwell time is important. Start mild with Prepsol or ValuGard's "New Car Prep". Stronger solvents (Lacquer thinner) will cause *eventual* clearcoat failure, and Wrangler C/C is weak enough, IMO.

Frequently, it is a combination of tools that accomplishes the goal; i.e. the blade and a solvent...

Be patient and work small areas when practical. The painted surfaces are frequently easier than anticipated.

It is the various rubber and vinyl trim pieces that cause the problems in my shop.

PM me if you have issues.

Good Luck.

Thanks Jim Buffit. I will try some of those ideas today. It's a nice cool day in South Florida. About 70 and sunny.:xyxthumbs

xpditor- See if you can get by with just the clay. A guy I work dogs with had the exact same thing happen on his work van and we got it all off with just clay, followed by AIO. It *was* still pretty fresh when we did it though. If you don't luck out, then yeah, Jimmy Buffit covered all the bases for a more in-depth approach.

Jimmy Buffit-Great information, :xyxthumbs :xyxthumbs thanks for your insights
