I was wondering how many of you mobile guys use lap tops, and if so do you use it to track customer appt, bookeeping , printing receipts and do you use them while on the Road.:chinese:

I also was thinking of purchasing a lap top for the road as well! Also what soft ware do you guys use to keep track of business???

I thought of this myself for a while. Untill I saw how many things can go wrong wiith a laptop for a mobile person. So I opted to purchase a smart phone with a thumb board. It was cheaper and that I could have internet acces anywhere I was give me the ability to take CC payments on my phone. Schedule apointments and recieve and send emails when I neede to.

Just an Idea

Laptops are good, but what I use is PDA Palm One Tungsten 5, tracks everything I need including appointments, spread sheets, emails etc. You can also get one with Built in Cell Phone so that you don't have to carry both, which I do right now.

Tracking prospects and customers is what I do for a living....For software I use Goldmine....It will sink with any of the PDA on the market so you can take that as the mobile unit...The tracking of what the customers needs are is unbelieveable....alarms me when its time for the next contact or detail, what I charged and did can store pics of the car, has an email function threw MS outlook....I can go on for some time about this

I use Microsoft Money to seperate my detailing income from my primary source of income which is my full time job. I have a Tablet PC that I carry around with me just about everywhere because it is so light. It's not a whole lot different than a laptop other than the fact you can write on the screen. Kind of like an overgrown palm I guess. My wife sort of assumed possesion of my laptop and the desktop obviously isn't an option. I connect through my cell phone to the internet for customers who want to make a paypal payment instead of writing a check. Having something for that purpose alone is worth it.

Laptops are great, but I just bring a PDA with me everywhere. I can do most of the things laptops do in about the size of 2 cell phones.

My iBook prints my invoices in my van, tracks transactions with QBooks and manages my calendar efficiently. My Tungsten is always in my pocket so I can access my schedule and all three (cell too!) have all my contacts. The laptop was not necessary but having all my business on one machine simplified my life.

If you do go with a laptop, be conscious of it. I lock mine to my steering wheel or tuck it when I am working on vehicles. Weekly back-ups to an EHDD is my routine.
