Klasse, Clay Bar's and Other Assorted Questions...

Hi folks,

New to the boards. I just tried the Klasse products on my BMW for the first time. I put down a single coat of AIO and then a single coat of SG. I then applied a coat of One Grand Blitz Wax. Very pleased with the results...

I'd like to add some additional layers of product. Can I apply SG over the Blitz Wax, and then add another layer of wax on top? If so, how long should I wait between applications.

My other question is, should I be claying my car on a yearly basis? I hear both good things and bad things about Clay Bars. Not sure what to do. Is there an alternative product to clay that works well?

My last question, I promise. How long do I need to wait after having minor bodywork done on a car before I can wash, polish and wax? I plan to have some minor scratches removed from my 02 Boxster and would then like to detail the car.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I'm not sure that's the best thing to do. Standard practice is to apply the AIO, followed by SG and then topped with a wax after all of the coats of AIO and SG have been applied.

I've never heard of anyone applying SG/wax, SG/wax, etc. I'm not sure if the SG would adhere to a waxed surface.

I do 2 X AIO, 5 X SG, then topped by a carnuba twice a year. In-between, I apply additional layers of carnuba and then spritz with a detailer.

I've clayed a couple of dozen cars (some more than once), and have never had any signs that it was hurting the paint. I only do mine once a year.

How deep are the scratches? You may be able to take them out yourself. I have taken out some pretty deep ones using tips I learned on Autopia.

As long as you are using a mild clay bar, it won't hurt or scratch the vehicle's paint. You can clay your car whenever it starts to feel rough.

As far as waxing after paint repair, it is recommended to allow 30 days before sealing the paint. I've seen people do it in 10 days without problems, but the paint manufacturers recommend 30 days to allow all of the solvents to evaporate from the paint. (Paint dries from the top down - so although it is hard on the surface, solvent is still percolating through the paint.)

I put responses inside the quote in caps.

NO, YOU CAN'T APPLY SG OVER A WAX AS IT WILL NOT BOND TO THE WAX. THE SG WILL JUST WASH AWAY. THE RULE OF THUMB IS TO GET YOU SG LAYERS LOOKING AS PERFECT AS POSSIBLE, THEN TOPPING WITH A WAX. THE ONLY WAY FOR YOU TO ADD MORE SG IS TO STRIP YOUR CAR DOWN WITH AIO AND START OVER. YOU SHOULD WAIT AT LEAST 24 HOURS BEFORE ADDING ADDITIONAL LAYERS OF SG. I PERSONALLY WAIT 1 WEEK. YOU SHOULD ALSO WAIT 24 HOURS BEFORE TOPPING YOUR SG WITH A WAX.

NO OTHER PRODUCT CAN DO WHAT CLAYING DOES. YOU CAN CLAY YOUR CAR WHENEVER YOU WANT. THE ONLY PITFALL OF CLAYING IS THE POTENTIAL FOR MARRING THE PAINT IF USED IMPROPERLY (IE THE CLAY IS DIRTY, YOU DROP IT ON THE GROUND THEN USE IT AGAIN, ETC) CLAYING WON;T WEAR AWAY YOUR CLEAR COAT OR ANYTHING. IT WILL SIMPLY LIFT CONTAMINATION THAT IS STUCK TO THE SURFACE, CONTAMINATION WASHING ALONE CANNOT REMOVE.

My last question, I promise. How long do I need to wait after having minor bodywork done on a car before I can wash, polish and wax? I plan to have some minor scratches removed from my 02 Boxster and would then like to detail the car.

THIS ALL DEPENDS ON THE SHOP. NOT ALL SHOPS' WORK ARE EQUAL. I WOULD CALL THEM AND ASK TO BE SAFE. SOME MAY TELL YOU 30 DAYS. I'VE HEARD OF OTHERS SAYING 90.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

NO PROBELM. GLAD TO HELP OUT.
