Kids School Packpacks???

I had to move my son's school backpack yesterday evening....I was blown away by how much it weighted...so I asked him....you plan scaling Everest? :D

He said that its all books and his gym clothes...so I asked do you need to carry all your books every day...no answer so that I have to figure that out.

I backpacked A LOT back in my twenties for two and three weeks at a time...not once do I recall carrying that much weight.

What ever happened to book lockers?

do they not have those in schools any longer...My son walks home from school about 1 mile and now I'm thinking that carrying that much weight will have some effect on his back over time.

Its pretty sad that our school systems can not afford to have something as simple as a book locker any longer:wall

I have seen this on the news before how they were concerned that kids were carrying to much in their backpacks and that they were worried that some kids would be getting hurt...I see alot more kids now days with almost like luggage with rolling wheels, just so they don't have to carry it...

There in lies a problem with my son and his peers...the wheelie luggage thing is for nerds :D

My college backpack didn't even weight as much as some of these kids are packing around. A lot of my text books were on CD ROM and all I had to pack around was a laptop and notebooks though. ;) All schools should start doing that and issuing TabletPCs to the students if you ask me. It would cost less money overall since you wouldn't have to buy so many books, and it would possibly bring out kids out of the back of the pack when it comes to education. They have already released the cheapest notebook in the world designed for students in other countries, so why not us?

I think that the future of education...I know in my daughters school, and she is only in third grade each classroom, has a 50 inch lcd learning moniter, that is touch screen, interactive and goes online...

The table pcs would be nice because they could just do there work and up load it to the teachers pc...

Ya, you and my wife are in total accord on this one. Ebooks, Tablet PC or any other electronic medium is the way of the future but the teachers are reticent to have this catch on. Besides, the publishing industry is against it as well. They make millions each year selling new and updated books to schools each year. Couple that with DRM(digital Rights management) and the authors are worried that they will not get their cut as well.

Heavy backpacks I always looked at as a good thing. It started me out with weight training at a early age. I think that's the reason why my back never hurts from detailing. Just had to throw my two cents in there.

I agree, this is a problem. Our kids are sure to grow up with back problems and wrist problems from the gameboys, etc.

There is a small lightweight device called an AlphaSmart that is made for school districts but few use them and I think they are more than likely private schools. Our public schools gives them to certain students but not everyone so those kids have to carry all the books AND the alphasmart.

But then, I had to walk 5 miles in the snow uphill both ways, oh wait, that was what my father said.

backpacks are getting stupid heavy, i know my little bro has to carry two if he has hw is 3/4 of his classes. Its nuts how heavy these things are getting, its to bad noeone has stoped to look at the long therm damage these are causing

I always had a locker in school, but very rarely had any time to switch books between classes. We only had 5 minute breaks in between classes and it took that long just to get from class to class with all of the hallway congestion.

BINGO we only have 4 min in my high school. Just thought i would put in my two cents dave seeing that i am still in high school. I have a locker but i have not opened it all year not even too look into it i carry all my things in my backpack. It used to way a ton but now that im a senior i just carry two spiral notebooks and thats it. Seeing that i only have two major classes lol. The backpack may seem heavy if lifting by hand but if you wear it right its not so bad. :rockon
