Keyed!

Yep...I got keyed today. I have a white Silverado and someone keyed the tonneau cover.

I have the scratch worked down to where it is almost invisible and I'm afraid to take any more paint off for fear I'll go through all the paint. I'm left with sandpaper marks from 1500 wet sanding.

How do I get rid of the sanding scratches?

Thanks, JimS

Usually with keyed cars you have to break out the touch up paint and clear coat. You'll never be able to sand it away. How good are you with paint? I know that Plasti-Kote has a great touch up kit that includes the clear coat and sand paper and everything. PepBoys carries it around here. I'd stay away from the Dupli-Color kit. The clear isn't the best.

As far as getting the sanding scratches out, you'll just have to polish them out. The Plasti-Kote kit has a good polish that does that. You could probably use just about any polish to do it though.

I've got the major scratch worked down to where I think I can live with it but there is an area of micro-scratches left from the 1500 wet sanding. I'd think that these could be polished away but I don't know what to use.

It seems to me that rubbing or polishing compound might be tooooo abrasive.

So.........what would be best to use?

Thanks, JimS

You could try some ScratchX or something like that. I mean, if you want those scratches gone then you are going to have to use an abrasive of some sort. If you have sanded below the clear coat then you'll probably have to reapply it to get it to match anyway. When you get keyed you ususally have to break out the touch up paint because wet sanding and polishing alone isn't going to take care of it.

I'll have to search for that Plasti-Kote kit, I've been using the duplicolor one for awhile and agree, the clear sux from it... :down

I suggest that you find those people and key their throats with a machete.

This is a good idea and I totally agree with it. However, everyone runs a risk of getting their car vandalized. Jealousy runs rampant in today's society and I think it's very immature for someone to take out their own personal frustrations on another person's property. But we can't watch our cars 24 hours a day...so this is the risk we run.

It sucks that your truck got keyed. My old 91 Mustang was keyed pretty good. The only thing you can do is try and repair it and move on. Sometimes, there isn't any justice...

Not quite sure how it works, but if your entire car gets keyed, could insurance just take care of it? I know some guy's car was keyed, and he was able to get an extremely nice paint job w/ a custom color from insurance money.

Some people just have no respect for other peoples' property!

With my last car someone keyed it after I had it only for just 2 weeks. I was not happy!

Sure your insurance would pay for it. You just have to cough up that $500 dollar deductible first.

why dont you just get your tonneau repainted i only paid $150 to get my mom's tonneau cover repainted and it saved me the hassle of trying to repair it

Problem solved.

My best friend owns a body shop and for the last couple of years has been teaching this old-fart how to do things.

I went to the garage last night and cranked up the Reddy Heater and the Mr. Heater and by 4:30 am I had the dammed thing painted! I'll lay down the clear today.....if I don't fall asleep. I don't do well on 4 hours sleep these days. Can't take those late hours anymore. By the way....I checked my work this morning and I have no runs and only a couple of dirt specks. Not too shabby for this amatuer hack. I'm feeling pretty proud of myself and blowing my horn to prove it!

Thanks, Jim

Someone walked clear to the end of the parking lot where I'd parked to avoid door-dingers to do the dirty deed. I hope they get a chance to see the truck tomorrow with no sign of any damage! That may throw them into such a tizzy that they'll be worried they are having LSD flashbacks or somthing. It might drive them crazy!!

later Jim
