keyed hood

Hey guys I was wondering if this is repairable? I have a key mark on the hood of an 04 STI. Paint is brand new since car is only a couple months old... Now I was reading in the how to colum and was wondering if I would be able to fix it with the touch up paint and wetsanding? I feel the scratch with my finger nail but I don't think it's down to the metal... I think there is still some primer and only the top layer of paint was taken off. Now I'm wondering I can attempt to fix it or just get the hood repainted? I have the PC and IP & FPII so I was gonna buff out the marring the wetsanding produces. And hopefully it comes out good. I just don't want to spend 500 to get a hood repainted.... Any advice for anyone that has done this before.

You can give it a try with touch-up paint and wetsanding. If you aren't satisfied with the results, then you can look into a repaint.

Use the finest sandpaper possible to get the job done. That will make it easier to buff and polish.

Thanks... I'm going to get 2000 grit sandpaper today and a sanding block... Hopefully I don't take to much paint off. I'll keep you guys posted. I'll take pics of the hood before the sanding process... I already covered it up with touch up paint.

If you have access to a PC I'd try hitting the scratch w/ SSR2.5 and a yellow cutting pad, try focusing the edge of the pad onto the scratch and work along it slowly, you may be able to buff it down, maybe not out but to where it won't be noticeable from 6ft away. If you're going to touch it up I say invest in some blue painter's tape and tape right to the edge of the scratch on both side's, this way you only fill the scratch w/ paint. Layer the paint until it at the stock paints level or a lil above. Then wetsand w/ 1500-2000 grit sandpaper. Follow up w/ a yellow cutting pad and some mild compoun/polish like DACP or SSR2.5 and then seal/glaze/wax the area.

Check out this scratch removal done w/ my PC, yellow CMA pad and some SSR2.5

So what process did you use there? That is amazing!

PC w/ a Yellow CMA Cutting pad and about 8 1/4" dabs of SSR2.5 spread on the edge/lip, not the side. of the pad. I try to focus the product on the damaged area, then set the PC to 3 and spread the product over the damage, stepped up to 6 and worked the edge of the buffer on the scratches slowly, inch by inch, and it worked like an eraser cutting the scratches right off the truck. I then did a second pass over the panel w/ SSR2.5 in the normal cross pattern way. Panel came out looking new, on 5yr old beat up paint.

Wow, I can't believe that. Those scratches look like they needed to be touched up/sanded that's why I asked. I can't believe you did that with just a P/C! Great job!

The two 1/4 wide scratches on the extreme rear need touch-up but I hit them good enuff to make them hardly noticeable at 6ft. I was surprised at the outcome too, but now I know just how much the PC can handle.

Man that's awsome... I already touched up the hood I just need to wetsand it now... I wish I would have taped along the side of the scratch cause then it would be easier to deal with... But now I have to make sure that I sand it really carfully... I'll let you guys know.. I'll take some pics of before and after I sand.. And after i buff it with the PC.
