I am looking for help repairing some paint damage given to our 2006 Mountaineer in a parking lot last week. Fortunately, it is only paint on a door bump panel (plastic) but it is about a 1x1 inch - larger than a simple paint pen or touchup brush can fix. Since the area is on a door, it is a verticle area. I have no paint equipment and plan on using rattle can materials.
My question is this. After cleaning the damaged area, are these the right steps to follow:
1. Apply adhesion coating since the piece is plastic.
2. Apply base color coat and sand it level with the surrounding area using progressively finer grit, wet sandpaper understanding this will also scuff the surrounding clearcoat of the original finish.
3. Apply 3-4 coats of clear coat to the area and feather out to surrounding area.
4. Using a DA, polish the area with Meg's 83 until uniform and then add a good wax top coat.
Am I going in the right direction? Can anyone suggest a better way to approach this? Any help or advice would be appreciated.
