I just finished detailing a fairly brand new black 911 las t night. The car had a fair amount of swirls with only a little over 2,000 mile on the odo. It took me two whole days, but in the end I virtually got this car's finish scratch free. I was using a high powered halogen lamp from Home Depot to monitor my results as I went along. Everything shows up with that lighting.
I did run into a couple of problems though. First, I find it very difficult to get the front and rear polyurethane bumper covers to be completely free of scratches. I did greatly improve them, but nowhere near as well as I was able to get the actual sheetmetal to look. Why is this? And, I did run into one particular problem area with the left rear quarter panel though. I was trying to remove one or two scratches that I missed the first time around, so I went back over that one area again with the Menzerna IP then followed up with Menzerna Final Polish II. The scratches were totally gone.
Upon appying the 3M hand glaze though, it was as if the scratch reappeared again. I ended up going over that area maybe 3 or 4 times until I didn't see any more hairline scratch. Now, in that one area it is the very slightest bit cloudy. You'd really have to took at it real hard with the halogen lighting to even detect it. At first glance it appears just as glossy as the rest of the paint. But, if I look real hard I can see what looks to be the haze that appears after using the IP polish, but with straight lines instead of the typical circular pattern and alot less noticeable. It looks exactly like a mild streaking effect, which at first I thought thats what it was since it is very difficult to be completely streakfree on a black car under such intense lighting after buffing off product.
I tried buffing by hand in an up and down motion and found that the so called streaking did not disappear or change direction. What do I need to do to eliminate this problem in this affected area, which is approx. a foot long? I was using a white polishing pad with the Final Polish II. Could it be that the pad is losing it's bite? It has seen quite a bit of use. Otherwise, I am perfectly happy with the results of this detail.
