Jumping to wool...advise

I was looking at jumping to the Edge 2k double sided wool pads (6"). I know you can't finish down LSP ready, so in light of this which pads would be best to buy?

black wool for heavy swirls/compounding

yellow for heavy/medium imperfections

green wool for light polishing

blue for finishing

what are some opinions on these pads? Also is the system 2000 needed to clean these or is there another option like the orange handled tooth brush thing?

my biggest concern is cleaning them, and having caked polish in these pads. I am looking to finish my corrections faster cleaner and having better overall results.

So, how do you clean them? Which ones work best and for 2 for $19.99 from AG you really can't go wrong :) advise please?

edit: oh yah I have a UDM, no rotary, what about the foamed wool?

I would use wool and foam

Black wool

Yellow wool

Green wool

Blue foam

White foam

Foam is still better for final polishing. Wool is better for cutting. Thats why the solo system is so good.

I don't know if it advisable to use wool without a rotary. I think wool really needs to spin and not in an orbital motion.

hmmm do the wool pads really have that much more cut, i mean the green wool has more cut than a yellow foam or orange foam? just curious or is it just personal preference?

how do you clean these things? :hm

wool w/o a rotary, I dont want to invest in another machine (dont have the money), I may get the $20 chicago electric one just to practice on...

IMO the green wool has about the same cut as the orange foam pad, but the green wool is faster and has creates less heat on the paint.

Soak them in a bucket of APC and water (1oz per gallon) agitate them on a grit guard or with your hands. Rinse them out and then spim them on the rotary inside of a bucket to get most of the water out.

@gmblack3a - sweet I knew someone would have a cheaper solution than the $119 system 2000 thingy...THANK YOU! I seriously wouldn't have thought of that at all

would a good citrus based cleaner do the job here or would I need something stronger?

so perhaps yellow/green and maybe a blue wool? I mean at only $9.99/ea if you order 2 they aren't such a bad deal they are double sided after all

I might get 2 of each kind of the 6 inchers, and just mess around with the black wool on my wifes car....hehehe hope she dont see me experimenting on her car

I use the system 2000 pad washer all the time. If it got ran over, lost or stolen I would order a new one right away.

Any APC will work, you do not need anything strong. 1oz of APC to 1 gallon of water.

Green and yellow will be plenty for you. The blue is very light cut and you really don't need to mess with the black till you get some experience with the rotary.

alright, I'll just go with yellow and green.

just as a side note, I got 4 inch pads coming also from the AG and I plan on using them for rims and spot polishing, plus I wanted to try some other stuff out :)

Thanks again for the help and prompt response everyone, thank you

edit: 4" foam pads not 4" wool (do they make 4" wool?)

Seems to me the foam would follow the contours of the body better than the stiff orange pads too. I've tried orange pads with the rotary and unless the surface is nearly perfectly flat, I seem to put a lot of holograms into the paint.
