Jeep Wrangler, ML430, CL500 + Poorboy's Polish w/Sealant testing

I got a bottle of Poorboy's Polish w/Sealant to try from Steve at Poorboy's (in the interest of full disclosure). I occasionally get products from him to try out and let him know what I think and so far, everything he's sent me to try I've ended up buying more of. Anyway, I had the opportunity to try it out the last couple of days.

2004 Jeep Wrangler. I detail it a couple times a year, the owner takes care of the regular washing and vacuuming so it is typically an easy vehicle to detail. The paint is less than two years old, the Jeep was wrecked soon after it was purchased. The repaint is mostly good but there are some problem areas in the black paint (like the primer didn't fill the sanding marks) and some weird checking in the small areas painted silver.

Since it didn't need any major correction, I started with Polish w/Sealant. My intial impressions are that it will correct MINOR defects with a polishing pad but isn't a substitute for poor prep. Optimum Poli-Seal has more cut, but I don't think PwS was designed for anything beyond minimal surface cleanup since it contains no abrasives. Appearance is clear and bright, just what you'd expect from a sealant. Really sharp reflections too.

These shots show how it looked after using PwS and an LC polishing pad:

This is after applying Werkstatt's Acrylic Jett by hand, I think you can see the improvement in depth and wetness, just like you can when using it over Prime:

I used Optimum Protectant Plus on the top, PwS to polish out the plastic windows.

Man that jeap looks dripping wet! I really like the PWS too. The cut really depends on what pads you use since it is a chemical polish. I like how it leaves the paint slick like the Poli Seal. It smells pretty good too!

is that Optimum Protectant Plus on the tires too? nice gloss, without the messy look. Wouldn't think green & black look good together, but that jeep sure does..:usa

1999 Mercedes ML430. Regular customer, I wash it 1-2 times a month, the rest of the time the local tunnel wash abuses it. There is also some body damage (passenger side rear door is creased) and it is supposed to go into the body shop "someday". The paint really could use some deep polishing but the owner really doesn't want to spend the money on that until the car is out of the body shop. They gave me a really nice tip for Christmas so I figured after washing it, I'd just go over it with PwS using a white LC polishing pad as a thank-you, not only for the tip but nearly 13 years of business. I wasn't really trying to correct anything (probably going to take Optimum Compound, orange pads and my Cyclo for that!) but PwS did a decent job cleaning up the finish (similar to Klasse AIO) and made it look noticably better. Very wet and reflective but like most sealants, it wouldn't be my first choice on solid black. I like it a lot better on metallics.

==============

1998 Mercedes CL500, metallic black paint, a much better color for a sealant, IMO. It gets the same care as the ML, but it sees me more than the tunnel wash...thankfully! The front end was repainted about 18 months or so ago, the rest of the paint is original. Last sealed with Prime/Acrylic Jett on July 5th and still noticably slick. I decided to see how the combo of PwS and EX-P would stack up to Prime/AJ. The paint needed very little correction, so no heavy polishing. I used PwS with a white LC polishing pad (didn't have any new Cyclo polishing pads in case you were wondering why I used the PC vs Cyclo) and sealed with EX-P, allowing it to cure for 30 minutes before removing. The wait time isn't *necessary* but recommended for a deeper shine. Since I let Prime cure 30 minutes before removing, it was only fair to allow the same for EX-P.

Visually, Prime/AJ and PwS/EX-P have a similar look, Werkstatt seems to have a slight depth edge while Poorboy's seems wetter looking. Both look very, very good to me. Durability will be the real test. I see this car enough that I can keep track of how this combo holds up. The cat you see in the 2nd pic seems to approve of the smell of PwS (smells like the gum you get with Topp's Baseball cards) and EX-P (tropical suntan lotion), because he kept walking up to the car and sniffing it.

...and yes, I did go back over the front end and get the gunk out of the seams. As you can see by the legth of the shadows, I had to hurry to get good sun shots. ;)

Actually, the tires, fenderwells, undercarriage and rear bumper were all dressed with Armor All.

About the color of the Jeep. When he had it repainted, he intended to give it to his son when he turned 16 and green and black are his school colors. Fast forward a couple of years and son wants his Dad's 2000 Chevy 1500 instead. He wanted a nice stereo and was afraid of theft due to the Jeep's canvas top. The Dad is now debating if he wants to keep the Jeep as a daily driver or get something else.

Wow, great work! That Jeep is very wet looking!

Looks like those Mercedes have lots of rock chips. Have you seen that often? (And that CL is a pretty ugly vehicle!)

That Jeep is soaking wet, incredible job there!

Jeep owner doesn't seem to take it off-roadin' much, if he does he sure knows how to keep it within the 'lines'.

On his cars, yeah. He is part owner of some topless clubs and they are pretty spread out. Lots of very fast freeway driving. I rode with him once and he drives 60 on city streets and 90 on the freeway. He used to be a cop so he is mostly immune to tickets.

Charisma-strickly pavement only. He wouldn't have spent extra on custom paint if he was going to off-road it. ;)

I dont mean to thread jack but when you apply EX-P with pc it it just a nickle size amount for 2x2 and do i need a ring for first prime of pad?

I don't apply EX-P by PC, only by hand.

:wow: All the cars looked excellent, dripping wet paint on every car and my favourite goes to the Jeep Wrangler :2thumbs: . Thanks for sharing your experience with PwS, very helpful indeed.

Nice work on the Mercs there, a lovely glossy looking black finish. Nice review of the Poorboys PwS, and is seems to have worked nicely on the Jeep. :up

Excellent work as always!

The Wrangler looks unbelievable! Excellent work. I wish I would have taken better care of my Jeeps paint.

how much EX-P do you put on a foam applicator? 2x2? thin layers? thanks scott!

 Huh? 2 x 2 when applying a sealant? Thin layer on the whole car, wait 30 minutes or so, remove. You always use thin layers when applying wax or sealants. Less than a dime sized glob of EX-P is enough for a panel.

fishbonezken-A combination of Optimum No Rinse, a plethora of brushes and terry cloth towels. I then dress with Armor All.

Did you wipe down the Jeep with WD-40? Damn that thing looks wet! That looks like a good combo for sure.

I appreciate the Benz (nicks, chips, etc...) I see plenty like that, but it's still gratifying to make them look better.

Well done on them all!
