I received this information and wondered if some of you were familiar with it.

Java Update and Get OpenOffice.org

This Java Update contains important enhancements to improve performance, stability and security of the Java applications that run on your machine.

SUN ALSO RECOMMENDS
OpenOffice.org
OpenOffice.org is a complete Microsoft Office compatible office suite, and is the leading open-source office suite for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, databases and more.

The Java Update makes sense, but what about the OpenOffice? Is this something that has some value or just another thing to take up space?

Openoffice looks like its own version of Microsoft office with alot of add ons.

I may actually download it and try it out.

There are many programs out that are "open source".

It's just another office suite, whether or not you need or want it is up to you. It's just that the source code is made available for others unlike the programs that are put out MS Office and Lotus.

I decided to skip it.
I already have MS Office and having the source code available is not too important to me. Whatever source code is. :D

I love OpenOffice and have used since it when it was called StarOffice. The truth of the matter is that it won't do much that MS Office won't do though it does have some nifty PDF features that MS Office doesn't. If you're happy with Microsoft there is no real reason to change. If you're the average home user that wants a full featured office suite (seriously it has all the bells and whistles) without paying the MS price, it's the way to go. I'm not sure if the current OpenOffice saves as .docx however. I would have to look into that. It by the way reads and saves in MS format and includes a Power Point equivalent also free. To get that in MS you have to buy the business edition. I like the menus in Open Office much better than the newest version of MS office. They changed the look for no real benefit. It is amazingly well supported and recognized bugs or security issues are usually fixed quicker than MS. It has a much smaller footprint also.

The real play here is if someone is a Linux user and wants an office suite. They can get the OS and the office suite and Firefox for free. It's all most people really need and you can stick it on an older PC for a small investment. It also is a plus if someone buys a new computer and they receive a 60 day evaluation copy of MS Office. It's a good chunk of change to get a key. If you can use MS you would find OpenOffice very easy to use, in fact you might have to look twice to see which program you are using. Another nice thing about it is that it looks the same in Linux, Windows or on a Mac. I've got an old Mac with a copy on it along with Firefox browser and it's all my kids need.

I'm not sure what's included in the Java update but it might have some fixes so that it plays nicer with Firefox.
