Is this Price Outrageous?

I got a bad scratch on my car (long story). I took it to the body shop the Jag dealer recommended. This is a very high-end place so I know the price has to be supporting the nice building, plasma TV and leather club chairs in the waiting area. The parking lot had a number of Jags and Porches.

To remove the bumper, take off and replace the badges, wet sand, paint the bumper and entire trunk, buff, etc. they quoted me around $2,400.

Is that price as insanely high as it sounds to me?
 
Prices vary by location but that sounds way high to me!

My buddy just got back in to in a parking lot. Pretty much the same work you described plus some new plastic trim and I think that was around $600ish.
 
That seems awfully high to me, like you could paint alot more of the car for that price. Even some of the higher end places here would be between 300-700 for the bumper.

What are the white flecks? Is that why you are doing the bumper and the trunk?
The orange peel is pretty high. Has the car been painted before (I would bet the trunk has)? If so, is it the original colour?

If it is a new colour, matching could be a little more expensive. But a high end bumper paint job with 5 year warranty shouldn't be any more than $600-$800. The trunk is more surface area, but high end is about the same. And that means removing and reinstalling decals, no dust, lower orange peel count, colour matching, good prep, lifetime warranty, and wetsand to nice shine.

I think your price is about double a good job price.

Another thing: take it to a detailer to assess b/a. Get in writing what they are offering, and a good detailer will tell you whether they did a good job (usually for the price of a wash & wax a month later). The round part of the trunk does not look like a good job (whether it is factory or repaint).

Theese guys are right. they will probably have to do some blends & stuff. also the newer Jaguar panels are alluminum & requires more work?? different technique?? This is not the old days where you could paint 4 panels for $500. Good luck.
 
Unfortunately, the more "high end" a car is, the more expense it is to repaint. It may make more sense to repaint the entire car.
 
I disagree that the whole car should be repainted. A good second opinion at a reputable body shop that paints European cars could fix her up for a reasonable price. If you repainted the whole car it would probably look worse plus it would cost upwards of $10k to do it properly.

That picture was taken right after the accident (garage door). Thise white dots are gone now.

I owe all of you are huge apology. I'm a bonehead! :bonk: When I got the estimate I was so shocked :eek: by the numbers I mis-read the thing.

Here are the right figures:

remove, repaint the rear bumber: $550
Repaint trunk lid: $517

I also got an estimate on the front end to repaint because the numerious rock chips on the bumper and hood around the lights, etc.: $1,730

No big deal I get shell shocked every time I see a body shop...what I might suggest is that you contact your local dealership / any new car dealership or high end used car lots...they should have a mobile or fixed location person that can fix that...they use them for trade-ins and such...I have two guys here in my area...and they are amazing at what they can do on that scratch and rock chips at a fraction of the cost

That price seems about right providing its an excellent color match, and there is no evidence of paintwork when completed.
 
I curious did you make an appointment with them after all?
