Is this oxidation, clear coat failure, or something else?

Hi, I know there are many posts and pictures with examples of the difference between oxidation and ccf, but I still can't figure out what this is on the hood of my car.

After washing the car, I used maguire's carnauba wax thinking it would help. When it didn't, I did a little research and thought I would try some old rubbing compound I had in the garage (so old it was dried out, I got the rag damp to put it on). Still didn't help, so I joined this site since most of my research led me here.

Please help! What is it and how can I make it look decent again. I am selling this car and would like it to look at least presentable.

I'm sorry, but that's clearcoat failure. Likely any abrasive compounds/polishes will only make it worse (by thinning it further). Your only shot for a temporary fix is to use a heavy non-cleaner wax that will "soak in" and will temporarily make it look better, but that will only last days to a week. I'm just throwing out things that might be available locally--Meguiar's #26 (paste preferably), Collinite 845 or 476S, P21S or S100 (Harley dealer). OTC waxes generally have cleaners in them (even if they don't call themselves "cleaner" waxes) which won't help in hiding that failure, which is why I listed the ones I did.

You might also want to consider the used car dealer-style ethics of putting some wax on the hood and selling the car and the buyer finding out a few days later you covered up a defect.

Sorry I didn't have better news.

I concur......it's a goner. Although I doubt it's worth it, a repaint or junkyard hood in better shape are your only choices.

yeah that cant be fixed. do some research on YouTube and you will find that you can actually use a good brand of spray paint, or even go to an auto body supply store and buy the exact match in a spray can, and get very good results, especially considering you don't have to worry as much about color match with a black car.
