Is This Nattys Wax Toast

Digging around in my supplies this morning and I came across this tub of Natty's wax. I'm pretty sure I purchased it at least 10 years ago and have not used it in a couple of years. As you can see it's broken apart and crumbling. I'm pretty sure I know the answer already, but I just wanted to get some opinions before I toss it out. Thanks.

Re: Is This Natty's Wax Toast

Have you tried to see if it will take to an applicator? If you squeeze one of those small chunks between your fingers, does it just turn to powder, or does it flatten out and stay together?

Remember, carnauba flakes are dry and they are made into car wax by dissolving them in a solvent--so it may just be dryer but still usable, or you may be able to "rejuvenate" it with an appropriate solvent...or it might not be worth it.

Re: Is This Natty's Wax Toast

You could try what another member posted awhile back. Take the wax out and put it in a small mug, heat up some water in a pot on the stove and put the mug inside the water and melt the wax slowly. Once its a thin liquid you can pour it back into the container. I tried it on a year old tub of nattys that was cracking and seemed done for and it worked great! looked like new.

I forget who did this first but please take credit where credit is due

Re: Is This Natty's Wax Toast

You should be able to float that container in a sauce pan of water. I melted a tin of cracked/crumbled Mothers Carnauba that way without having to remove it and repour it.
The wax ends up a little firmer which I prefer anyway.

Re: Is This Natty's Wax Toast

Tried it on a pad and it just keeps breaking apart.

I did see the post about re-melting wax and thought about trying that. Then I read another post somewhere that said if you do that some of the oils would evaporate and dissolve. Guess it's worth a shot.

Thanks everyone.

Re: Is This Natty's Wax Toast

I had to melt down my Natty Red. It kinda got messed up when I tried reshaping it in the container.
Double boiler method.
After it rehardened it looked like a new container of wax.

Now I keep it in the fridge.

Re: Is This Natty's Wax Toast

Pop that baby in the microwave for about 5 mins (keep an eye on it and when it completely turns to a liquid you can stop)

Let it dry in room temperature uncovered until hard

It looks wet enough to be like new again =)

Let us know how it goes!

5 minutes could be a bit much. IF you go with this method, be sure to cover with a paper towel or something.

Being that Pocket's just tied the knot, he is unaware of the consequences from his lovely wife, if he were ever to attempt such a task in HER microwave.

Good Luck

Re: Is This Natty's Wax Toast

Pockets gave me the same advice on a jar of Natty's Blue, but I used a double boiler on the stove and the wax turned out great. It worked fine after the melting. Microwave that stuff and see what happens.

Yeah and powder coating in the oven can be an issue for them too. :)

Sneak it in the micro. I would like to know the results. I have had success with the double boiler method.

I'll give the microwave a try when the wife's not home. Thanks!

Re: Is This Natty's Wax Toast

Yes, the double boiler method works as well but it takes a bit of a process to set that all up and cleanup is a pain

We actually have a microwave here designated to wax duty for making sample sizes of the Natty's Blue

Time will vary microwave to microwave just watch it until the lumps turn all liquid in the wax and stop it right after that, melting any longer will heat the jar up to much and melt that and make a mess (ask me how I know haha)

Also be careful as the wax in a liquid state is flammable

Edit - Okay so I got curious and light some Natty's Blue on fire in the jar .... it burns .... very well. Once it gets a little liquid it lights right up. So just be careful with any wax and open flames as it's flammable =)

Re: Is This Natty's Wax Toast

UPDATE!
Had the chance to try out the microwave routine. Being on the safe side I went for 2 minutes each cycle. At the end of 6 minutes the wax looks the same with no sign of melting. The tub did get a bit warm though.:o Don't know if I should go longer as there was no change in the clumps, as they still look dried out.

May give the double boiler method a try. Thanks for all the suggestions.
