Is the OEM Flex 3401 DA Backing Plate *GOOD* enough?

Guys,



Is the OEM Flex 3401 DA Backing Plate good enough? I think Flex has refined the backing plate but I'm not sure..



Should I instead go for a molded urethane Flexible backing plate?



My Pads are 6 inch. They have a 5inch and a 6inch Flexible urethane backing plates at Chemical guys.

The Flex 3401 does not take a standard backing plate. Your only options are the backing plate it comes with, or the Edge conversion for it. (The 3401, as a forced-rotation DA, has a ring gear molded into the OD of the backing plate)

Are you all using the OEM backing plate that the Flex 3401 comes with?



I thought that a hardened plastic Backing plate would be quite dangerous with a powerful amchine such as the flex...



Curious to know what everyone is using. Plz chime in...



Any body's thoughts on the Edge system with the Flex DA? The adapter is 50 $$$

Since there aren't any other backing plates for the Flex 3401 it's sorta a moot point IMO :nixweiss



The Edge adaptor plate is just a Flex pad mounting post attached to a regular Flex backing plate.



You wouldn't *WANT* a flexible plate as it'd cause more backing plate-to-housing contact problems and people already seem to have plenty of those with the rigid plate. There isn't much clearance between the back of the plate and the felt ring that provides cushioning lest the plate contact the machine's housing.



I suppose somebody could fab a backing plate where they attach some thick, flexible foam to a standard Flex plate, but it's not necessary IMO.



Even with fairly thin, firm pads, it's really not an issue. IMO most of the "flexible" backing plates aren't all that flexible anyhow and on machines like this it doesn't really matter.
