Is some clearcoat damage just beyond repair?

I decided to detail my John Deere GT275 and really feel like I've hit a wall.

The tractor is 16yrs old, been through 4 owners, NEVER been washed once, smashed into multiple trees, a barn, a cow, a house, several fences, as well as flipped once or twice in the ditch.

I've tossed everything my cyclo has at it, to point of just bogging it down to where it can barely move, the most aggressive products and pads I have, and although it looks good to most people's view, from an autopean standard I'd give it a 70%.

You can see what i mean below.

Got rid of the oxidization, most of the scratches, but there's just some scratches in the clear that are vexing me.

I've wetsanded with 1200, 1500, and 2000, and the marks are STILL there (I believe this is single stage paint, if that matters)....it's like wetsanding is doing nothing to them (and thus my cyclo definately can't remove them) .... they only show up under hallogens, can't feel with my fingernail.

*sigh*

I dunno, maybe I'm just looking for re-assurance that a 16yr old single stage paint that's never been touched before and has been slamed into trees, fences, animals and houses may be impossible to bring to autopean standards?

It looks pretty good for what you have done already, but I would also think if the paints still not in that good of quality, you might go ahead and paint it, or buy a new hood for your lawnmower.

It'd have to be a repaint of the whole tractor. The WHOLE thing is scratched to high hell. I used to think it was funny when I'd fly around trees cutting the grass (but scratcing the hell out of it on the branches) .... now, not so much so.

*sigh* It's just one of those things where you go in thinking 'I CAN DO THIS!' :woot2: to 'Yea, it's okay, but nowhere near Autopean perfect :bawling: '

Starting to get there

Man, I really hate doing projects where I think it's going to be a 2-3hr job and it's more like 15hrs :sadpace:

If you can try a rotary, I would try that...

Eh...he already wetsanded with 1200! I'm surprised he hasn't hit primer already.

Isn't that powder coated?

Sounds like single-stage (my Deere stuff always is, not that I've polished or otherwise detailed any of it in ages).

However, to be fair, I used i200 VERY gingerly; I spent most of my wetsanding time with 2000. Didn't matter because i didn't put a dent in most of the damage.

I'm fairly certain it's single-stage because i pull off a little bit of green onto my pads ..... plus the fact it's gone from completely oxidized (not even being able to see ANY reflection in it), to looking like an automotive finish, so it definately isn't powdercoat.

Oh well, I suppose after another backbreaking 10hrs or so I'll have the pimpest tractor out here :rofl
