Is it possible to reshoot the car with clear coat?

Well my friend's red 2001 porshe boxter had extremly bad swirls. Today he had a detailer remove most of the swirls with a rotary buffer. The problem is that it went through the clear and removed some paint. He wanted to know after he got all the swirls removed if its possible to just spray the whole car with clear coat?

Thanks.

I don't think it would look right.... any imperfection such as a scratch or a rock chip would show through. It probably wouldn't cost that much more to get a new paint job. If he got the same color he wouldn't even need to get the engine bay or door jams painted.

It can be done, but why spray the entire car? I would think re-clearing the offending panel would suffice, and then get the swirls fixed on the rest of the car.

The bad panel would need to be degreased and wet sanded with 800 grit and resprayed with clearcoat, you can't re-clear it without scuffing it first, it won't bond well. Don't worry, even though the scuffed clear will look almost white, when you spray clear urethane over it you'll never know-it will look crystal clear again.

If the part he broke through has a bad edge, it might show as a dip or waver in the paint, so it would need to be feathered without disturbing the base too much, but typically when a buffer burns through it's pretty smooth. You don't want to wetsand the base if you can help it, it can change the tone. If the broken -through area is large, probably best to blend in some base color in that spot before clearing.

Good luck.

My neighbors claim to get it done by the dealer every year on their hightop conversion van. They say its too hard to take care of and wax (HELLO A DETAILER LIVES NEXT STORE) so the dealer cons them in each year.

I've never inspected it, but I told them my services are available to them.

What I think? It's a crock of bolonga. Another way dealers try to scam you out of money.

As far as your friend goes, detailers should be covered by insurance. I'd file a lawsuit against the detailer unless there was a written agreement before that said something to the effect of burning the paint (highly doubtful). I think the detailer should pay for a repainted panel. Have him go talk to the detailer.

The same thing happened to my Z at the nissan body shop. After some idiot ran into me, and had new bumper/fender installed, they didn't match the paint the first time, and to boot put swirl marks all over my Z. Took her back to have the paint re-done, and their swirl marks removed, and the idiots burned off some of the paint on the spoiler. Not to mention they buffed the new paint, and burned off some of the now matching new paint from the splash guards. They are going to fix it at my convienience, but what a hassle. Now I am questioning whether they have damaged or removed the clear coat from the rest of the car.

i needed a respray last year. the shop had the tape on my car while it was sitting in the sun. when they pulled the tape, it ripped the clear coat off of a panel i had resprayed with clear before ....so they degreased/sanded/re-cleared the section they botched. can't tell. (glasurit clear)
