Some Detail Sprays will work very well for what you asked about doing.
Not really a Detail Spray, but it is designed for cleaning is Poorboy's Spray and wipe.
It is a waterless wash that disolves dirt and will leave the surface feeling exactly like the wax or sealant that is on the car.
Adam's detail spray will also work very well on a slightly dirty car and will also leave a nice shine and smooth finish. Do a search on both of these products for more info.
A compound is a very abrasive polish used to remove scratches from the paint. Usually on todays clearcoat finishes a polish like Meguiar's DACP or Poorboy's SSR 2.5 is all that is needed.
