Is car wash soap considered a detergent?

Why are you asking . Its a soap so aren't all soaps a kind of detergent.

Here's the meaning of Detergent

a cleansing agent: as a : SOAP b : any of numerous synthetic water-soluble or liquid organic preparations that are chemically different from soaps but are able to emulsify oils, hold dirt in suspension, and act as wetting agents c : an oil-soluble substance that holds insoluble foreign matter in suspension and is used in lubricating oils and dry-cleaning solvents

Detergents by nature of chemical composition have a higher Ph and very alkaline, contain surfacants, wetting agents, suspension agents. Soaps are usually Ph Neutral, clean very well, and are more gentle which is exactly what you want for your auto. They also have chemical wetting and suspension agents. Using a chemical with a high Ph will strip the finish of it's protection, much like liquid Dishwishing detergent. Honestly it depends on the what application the product was engineered for, regardless of what it's called. In textiles detergents are highly alkaline which opens up pores of the fabric. In the rinse acid is reintroduced to return the Ph level to normal and close the pores. Automotive products are an entirely different game and everything I have ever used is Ph Neutral.
