Iron-x and Coating (Opti-glass/Opticoat) removal inquiry

Some questions I have had on my mind for a while and I was wondering if someone can shed some light for me. I have used these products several times but I’m not fully aware of their benefits or flexibility

Iron-X Usage
1. How necessary is it to remove iron from paint before compounding/polishing? Assuming you would still clay the car beforehand.

2. How necessary is it to remove iron from paint before applying coating, such as Opti-Coat 2.0 or CQUK? Wash, iron-x, clay, IPA wipe down (or Eraser) would be my usual process. Would not using iron-x affect the bonding ability of coating?

Coating Removal – Opti-Glass and Opti-Coat 2.0
1. For anyone with experience using opti-glass, what was your method for removing it? My layer of opti-glass is about a year old. I’m thinking to either apply a new layer or a layer of CQUK in a few months but I want to make sure it will bond to my windows

2. Similar to the question above, for anyone with experience using opti-coat 2.0, what was your method for removing it? I’m going to do a mixture of Opti-coat 2.0 and CQUK on my car but I’m thinking about removing opti-coat 2.0 from my front bumper (swirls from winter seasons).

I would use the Ironx before the clay step and it makes the clay pick up a lot less contamination. I would also skip clay unless you already own it and get a nano scrub pad for your DA. So much faster.

I never removed either on purpose, but from what I know polishing if the only way other then letting it wear away on its own being abraded off by the elements.

Hi JSFM35X, thanks for the response. Yes, I mentioned in OP, I'm using iron-x before claying. I have actually switched over to the nanoskin towel this year and I'm loving every moment of it.

I just want to know the importance of using iron-x as per my two questions. Yes the iron is being off pull off the paint, but what are the real benefits to that in terms of prep for polishing or applying paint coating?

I imagine orange pad + compound would be a possible option to remove opti-glass or opticoat just that I want to eliminate the guess work if someone has experience doing so successfully without any coating left behind

Hi! first off removing Opti Glass you can do with just a quick polishing, And I'm a firm believe that IX any car that is going to get coated because it does more than clay alone. And Carpro recommends against using UK on glass. Also am I understanding this right you want to mix UK and OC?

In my opinion the iron x is a must for a coated car or a sealed car. It removes a ton of stuff as is evidenced by how clean the clay is. To prove it to yourself, ironx a panel and then clay it and an adjacent panel. You will be shocked.

1. Before polishing compounding? I would say its not necessary but a REALLY good idea. Any contamination is going to interfere with the polishing process, how much depends on how much contamination is on the paint. IF you clayed the paint first, which will remove topical contamination, then polishing will remove any below-surface contamination quickly. Again though, clean paint is always easier to polish.

2. At the very least make sure to clay. If you are polishing, you really don't need the iron-x or similar product, but if not polishing, then I would definitely use it.

1. Light polish.

2. Opti-Coat 2.0 is going to require some fairly dedicated polishing.
