IPA why 50/50?

I notice a lot of people recommend using IPA as a 50/50 solution with water. Is there something wrong with just using straight 70% or 91% IPA? I'd think if it doesn't hurt, it probably cleans better at full strength. So any reason to dilute it?

Also, the water in the solution will probably evaporate clean, but if you mix it you'll have to use distilled to do the same or you'll possibly leave something behind right? So this is another reason I see to not mix.

Also, do you guys rub the IPA in like you're really trying to clean the paint of stuff though you can't see it. Or is it just a light pass and it'll do it's job?

For the past few months, i've only seen full strength IPA wipedowns...

I do a few light passes... No need to rub it dry.

I'm pretty sure people usually say 50/50 they mean a side by side 50/50 comparison before and after the wipedown?:nixweiss

No, I'm definitely seeing it used as 50% IPA + 50% water solution to do a wipedown.

I usually mix mine 50/50, distilled water and 91% IPA. Straight IPA can sometimes cause cloudiness in clear bras, plastic and rubber trim, even some clear coats.

mines always mixed. why? Cuz that is what I was reading back when I got into this detailing stuff. Recetnly I've been seeing more and more 100% users.

Another thing to consider. If 50/50 gets the job done why not add the water to save you money. Not like IPA is super expensive but water is cheaper.

It's funny this thread started today...

Jason Rose just posted his first time here on autopia, and it pertains to using IPA as a wipedown liquid!

Oddly enough, his first post has not yet "landed", but his second one did (relating to M105/M205). He posted his IPA comments on this thread:

http://www.autopia.org/forum/car-detailing-product-discussion/117635-ipa-105-205-a.html

We had a discussion related to the subject because I wanted his opinion on the subject of using the standard 91% IPA versus glass cleaners containing alcohol. Since it had come up in the above thread, and I usually use glass cleaner, I wanted his insight on the subject (because he uses both separately when he tests).

I think you will be very interested in his educated comments on the topic.

I think his posted was locked away or something... any moderators out there that can approve it?

personally, I empty an entire bottle of 91% into a spray bottle, and top if off with distilled water, so it's not exactly 50/50, but more like 70/30 or something, favoring the 91%

I hope that Mr Rose's comment will find its way into publication light. I'd like to read what he has to say on this neuralgic subject. :)
