Hello everybody.. I am new here on this great site.. First a little background.. I started detailing while in College about 10 years ago at a Large New Nissan , Dodge Dealership here in PA , I was 18.. I really didn't know a whole lot about it at first.. Just a job.. Well, I paid very close attention to all of the top guys there and learned and havnt stopped learning.. About two years into the job I loved it so much that I decided to quit college and go to a trade school for auto body refinishing to maybe go into that field.. Well , While I love body work, the pay versus the chemical paint fume exposure is just not worht it to me.. Not to mention the money in auto body shops isn't too great.. So I have stuck with detailing at this dealership , also learned PDR and Spray in bedliners, I do alot of Scratch repair that goes beyond buffing.. Its a method of Getting the exact match for the paint , filling the scratch and wet sanding/ buffing smooth .. Done right, you can't notice unless you know its there.. But anyways.. I have always been revered at this place as doing Great work and have always made Good money. Now lately I have been thinking of buying a shop and Doing FULL PROFESSIONAL DETAILS, Not the quickie jobs.. As well as offering scratch/PDR repair to the customers.. Basically it would entail everything Appearance wise.. I Will make somewhere between $37,000 and $40,000 this year working at the dealership alone.. Which here in Central PA thats not a bad working man salary.. I am the Head Guy there/ Supervisor as well too.. But I would say 7 hoiurs of the day I am detailing... My question to you guys is what is the profit potential of owning a Shop .. I mean do you think it would be worth the extra efforts.. I would like to start it out as a one man operation, me doing all the work at first.. I know there would be a lot of variables, but give me some insight on how well you guys do.. Thanks. for your help..
