Interesting Paint Chip Repair Process

Just One More Coat
Friday I was at my local detail supplier...I was talking about the chips on the hood of my BMW and how hard it is to get all the wax out of them...he showed me the hood of his car and told me about a guy who can fill in the chips....So I called the guy and he came out on Saturday....Clean the hood with a mineral spirits solution, then take OEM paint and to work in in the hole with your thumb covered with a rubber sleeve and a cotton sleeve...wait for the paint to set-up and then use a polish based product to take off what is on the surface...it filled in the holes for the most part, but more than that it colors the holes with the paint...it looked 110% better than it was and the cost was $75.00

Sounds like Langka's Blob Eliminator sort of.

Not completely but along the same lines...I"m gong to order some Zaino clear sealant to put over the top so that I can fill in the rest of what's left....I'm just tired of seeing wax build up in the chip holes

I may try the mineral spirits and see if that removes it...then I may try to same type of technique that they did to your car.

I tried the SW on the bumper with a finishing pad...it helped but there is still alot there. Even if it doesn't work I know the inevitable for me will be a repaint.

The mineral spirits will clean the chips up of all product..do a small area to start about 12 x 12 inches...then with your fingers rub the paint in a circular motion...let setup then use a chemical based polish to clean every thing that is on the surface...it color the chips in and although they are still there it looks a lot better

How long about does it take to allow the paint to set up? Over night?

What kind of polish did they use? Meaning can I use something like SSR1 or SSR2, or something like Menzerna or Pinacle Polish?

In my case the paint set-up in about an hour its a real thin film on the top of the clear...he used a P&S product...but it was a chemical based polish like PB PP

Cool thanks...I will get some PB PP and try it out.

I appreciate the help.

Just as a followup for this process that chip repair has held up very nice...when I wax the car there is no signs of wax deposits in the small RC holes...the hood is clean and wax residue free at an angle you can see the small holes but they are filled in....all in all I would do this again in a heart beat

Sounds much better than the chip repair I did myself

I have found now that if I go over an area with my PC and a mild polish it gets rid of alot of the white residue left from waxes and such, which tends to hide alot of the sand blasted effect on my bumper.

However if I want it to stay like that I can't put any protection back on...

Zaino has a clear sealant that I was looking at that I was going to try until this paint guy came along...Once you have the holes cleaned out then the clear sealant would be the choice for protection.

I just checked it out...on their site...have you used this beofre? I just want to make sure its worth it at $30 for a small container...I understand that its used in little amounts.

But this sounds like what I need.

I don't understand (I say that a lot).

Is it:
1. Smearing factory paint touch up over an area with a rubber glove & cotton glove (step 1, step 2?) as thin as you can.
2. Then polish it clean?

Is that it? In my experience, paint touch up is a different colour. Won't that show?
And won't you see a line where the lacquer ends and the b/c begins, or does it all work off?

You are correct about the process...I watched this guy do it...after he had all the paint on the hood...he used a rubbing compound of sorts that remove what was on the surface...seemed to me that he was working the paint into the holes so that it was level with the clear...once done I used a rotary to remove what film that was on the hood, the haze from the compound with some polish...at an angle you can see where the little holes are at, but it the general look of the car you cannot....compared to what it looked like before...there is no more wax deposits on the hood where as I had tons of tiny specks every time I did something to the car....the trick he said is to make sure the paint matches 100%...my jet black was an easy one compared to metallic paints

The guy that did the paint chip repair on our car had his team mate wife use a VERY FINE paint brush (a tiny detail brush found in any art supply store that has like 5 fine red sable hairs). I've done a lot of art stuff over the years and thought "how hard is that?!?!?". So I got a medium side pill container like jar full of the matched paint from our local auto body store. It was only $5.00. If I have bumber rash on the very bottom of the bumper I can use an air brush to blend it in.... (that is what the detail guy did on the corner of our bumper, also.) Now I have the paint and brush to touch up if I need to do the rock chips in the future. The paint code is under the hood on part of the engine on our car.
