Inner exhaust tip rust

Hey guys, The exhaust tip on my IS is all brown on the inside... it was black to begin with but this just seems to be rusty water that dried and hardened on the inside of the tip. when i use a towel with alcohol on it, it turns brown but doesnt clean it all off(probably would if i kept scrubbing). any suggestions?

Is it a chrome plated tip or stainless steel? I've always had good success with my trusty GS27/ScratchX on rusty exhaust tips. I'm sure it would work for you.

The same thing happend to me on the 850.

The chrome coating was covered up by bad rust. Since I dont have anything chrome on the car, I took off the tip, sanded the rust off, polished then painted it black. It gives the exhaust a more custom look.

I dont know how that would look on the IS though. :nixweiss

Just my 2 cents. :xyxthumbs

On the outside of the tips, I use Mothers Aluminum Polish. On the inside......I paint them with Rust-o-leum black Hi-Temp Bar-B-Q grill paint (brushed on)...

(I also paint the mufflers with Hi-Temp Aluminum spray paint........yes I have issues.);)

So am I. The stuff I use works just as good on the insides of the tips as it does on the outside.

I actually paint the entire exhaust system routinely from the cat on back.

I reallize that if it's going to rust it wll probably be from the inside out, but, because of the road/salt conditions here in KC in the winter, it certainly can't hurt.

I rotate my tires twice per year and, while I have the car up on Jackstands...I just spray the exhaust pipes and mufflers (particularly the welds)....I don't worry about overspray onto the undercarriage because you can't see it.

I don't paint the entire under-carriage...although there is a guy in my car club that I have accused of that!
