Info 3-m film Alternative

People have been sending me PM’s around a comment I made regarding an alternative to the 3-m film. I heard about it at a professional seminar last year. The process is done using a clear coat with an additive called “Plasticizer�. The molecules in the Plasticizer are tighter than traditional clear coat making it more resistant to stone and rock chips. The shops applying it around here have tested it on cars and the findings are 60% more resistant to chips. Keep in mind if I dime size stone hits your car going 40MPH it won’t help. The effectiveness is in the ability to withstand minor stones without chipping the paint. Cost is about 35% more than the 3-m film, reason is because the areas it is applied to has to be treated just as you would if you were repainting. Hope than helps some. Gary

I'm going to asume you mean that it is 60% more resistant to chips than regular paint, not 60% more resistant than the standard 3M Rock Guard.



Some OEMS apply a lower strip of painted on rock guard to help with rocks coming off the tires. The problem with the ones I have looked at is that it is very apparant that there is an application of the product, it is either textured, or even milky. The 3M Rock Guard tends to blend in very well, and is almost invisible...

Correct, 60% more resistant than regular paint. I agree that the 3-m film is visible on the car, also, if you get a chip from a cosmetic view, the film still gets chipped if not the paint, so what you see on your car is still an eye sore. Gary
