infiniti/nissan clearcoat is it hard or soft

superchargedg

Twin Turbos
im getting ready to get the swirls out of my reg g35.i was wondering if the clear coat was hard(like bmw) or softer.i am going to start with pinnacle xmt#1 on a lake country orange pad and then if i have too step up to xmt#2 with the same pad.the swirls are not really bad but you can see them in the sunshine very easy up close.they are very fine, from 10 feet the car looks fantastic.

Very soft!!! I would PM Picus or G35stilez for a more in depth answer. I think PICUS has a lil more epxerience on G's paint since he has had his G longer. I know he recently posted a bunch of info regarding how to go about polishing the paint on a G since it seems to be very finicky. Both of the guys above do stellar work and will be plenty familar with Infiniti paint (Which sux btw)

If it's anything like my 2004 Nissan Sentra SE-R then it sucks. I wouldn't be surprised if Nissan used same quality paint on their budget SE-R and their high end G35 :(

I heard through the grapevine that 06 and newer have a scratch resistant clear. Further proving that, I have had my car for over 3 months (since new) and do not have 1 marr or swirl on her. Even with the most rigorous washing methods (which I don't usually do), you would be hard pressed to keep a car that perfect with "standard paint".

I've done '05 and older Infinitis/Nissans and their clear is pretty soft and easy to correct. Don't bother with the front bumper as they are all chipped to h3LL.

thanks bud,and yes you are right about the frt bumpers.

Heya. Got your PM, thought I would reply here to everyone can see it.

First, in my experience '06's *DO* have harder clear than '03-'05, however I wouldn't call it scratch resistant. It is still significantly softer than most American/German paint. It's just not stupid soft like the 03-05's.

So, if you have an '03-'05 the key is *many moderate steps* as opposed to one hard compounding then finishing like you would normally do. For example, using Menzerna IP/orange x2 + FPII/white x2 will likely achieve better results than PG/yellow x1 then whatever for two reasons. One, Infiniti paint is finicky with letting go of deeper marring. It seems to like slow moderate passes rather than tougher polishes. More importantly, if you do a compound like ssr3/pg you will create enough haze with a PC that it will be a *total pain in the butt* to remove. Better to use a moderate polish a few times and create a small amount of micromarring that will come out reltatively easily.

A second tip is when finishing, if you find you have some micromarring/haze that will not go away try a super light combo, like FPII/grey @ speed 2 SLOW passes no pressure; oddly unlike harder paints this seems to take out the micro marring and finish smooth.

With a rotary things are different. Infiniti's are much easier to deal with. With a PC it's a bit tough because its hard to finish down well. I've not used the XMT series, so I don't know how it'll work; but I would just start light and move up until something starts to work, then do as many passes with that as required.

Hope this helps.

The M says it's Scratch Resistant under the hood :), not mine though.

I will try to dig up more info.

Eh, I dunno. I've done five '06's now; they are definitely harder than the 03-05's but I would still say they are softer than the average car. I did a Ford Focus today that had harder paint. :)
