I’ve got myself a painting project ……..

Just picked up myself a new set of toys today – AC Hydraulic Jackstands & Matching 2 Ton Jack. I’m not too crazy about the paint finish on the jackstand though. I would expect better for a $95 jackstand. It’s like a metallic aluminum finish but it’s the type that rubs off your hands, etc when touched.

What else better than to repaint it :) . Need some tips however, as I haven’t actually painted metal like this before. I’m thinking along the lines of

Wetsand till the existing paint is flat or down to bare metal

Does this look about right. What’s a good durable paint? The local shop where I pick up my Meguiars stuff has Seymour and Tempro aerosol cans. I’m thinking along the lines of just gloss red or schoolbus yellow unless some kind Autopian want’s to send me some Dupont or PPG Paint in a Spray Can.

I would actually use something along the lines of Krylon Industrial Paint. They make a bare metal primer and a complete line of colors for their industrial paints. That way touch ups even years down the road are as close as the local Home Depot. I would just sand to 320 grit, prime, then give 3-4 finish coats with ample drying time in between. Then give the final coat a few days to really set; place them in the sun if it is available this time of year where you live. :)

Nice stands, I thing high vis yellow, red, lime or orange would be nice and save a few broken toes.

Get the Rustoleum Industrial paint from Home depot. can get it in either spray or small cans to brush on. They make a high adhesion primer and a very tough clearcoat also. I painted the airtanks on my truck almost 2 years ago (they hang down on the frame rails below the truck, so they see alot of flying road debris) and they have barely even chipped!!

They make it in high vis. colors for indutrial/ warehouse applications. Stuff is very user friendly.

If the paint is the type you suggest ie; aluminum which wipes off in your hands. You will have to stripe all the aluminum color off and get to bare metal or your new color coat will not adhere and will just flake off in time.

Should be easy to strip off the existing paint if its coming off on your hands. A chemical stripper would do the trick in a matter of minutes, I'd guess.

Clean off any residue, sand/scuff, prime, then go to town with whatever turns your crank. I think something like DuPont ChromaLusion or something cool from House of Kolor.

And there's always the epic rodder's creed: "If it don't go, chrome it"
