Cool my garage . I don't have a way to vent . Can I use a Portable Evaporative Coolers? Or is it to humid in SC. I sure miss my dad. He was a expert in mechanical things, Thanks

Yeah, just watch it with fans as they can stir up a lot of dust if you get a nice big one (I pointed it *out* of the shop back when I had the dealership building.

Some of those portable A/C units I've seen in catalogs look pretty good, though with their small size I bet they're sorta directional if you know what I mean.

If you guys are looking at those Portable upright a/c units on wheels about 5000 btu for $500 I can give you a little advice...don't get one.

I've have several of these that I use for emergency duty when main systems fail. They hardly work at all.

Portable a/c is kind of unobtainable. A garage area is usually hot, because of lack of insulation, humid if there is any washing involved. 12000 btu would be minimum size for a normal size garage.

Depending on the size of your garage you may want to cut a hole in a outside wall and put a room a/c in a wall sleeve or go with a small split system like a Mitsu Mr. Slim.

How about a Evaporative Coolers

Evaporative coolers work well here in the desert southwest where relative humidity is often 10 - 25%. My guess is that in SC, there would be very few days where one would do any significant cooling.

Evaporative Coolers only work well where there is lots of ventilation, also their efficiency go's up the higher the temperature, but don't work in high humidity.

what am i missing here? why not use a conventioinal window unit for 1/4 cost of those pictured?

That is what I was going to post. First thing you want to do if you already havn't is insulate the garage as much as possible. Then get a regualr window air conditioner. If you don't have a window or don't want to put it in a window then cut a hole in the wall and stick it in. I have had an a/c in the garage for the last few years and love it.

exacxtimundo!! i had a leftover unit when we moved from a home w/o central a/c and couldn't find a place to store it w/o it being in the way. *ding* i saw the light. why not store it...in a window...where i don't have a/c!!

:hifive: nice work men!!

why spend the equivelent of a full house a/c unit for the garage when you can pick up a small unit for same as a PC and :chill: & :waxing:

ciao'

So would a window unit work in my garage at over 1100 sq ft, with 10.5' cielings in the awful Michigan hot / humid summers? Oh and would it work without doubling my electric bill? My garage has 3 windows in it but is fully insulated, drywalled and has an insulated door.

i only have used my a/c in the garage a few times. it doesn't get chilly on a hot day for me, but i have a 24 x 21 garage with very high pitched hip roof, no drywall or insulation and fiberglass doors. i felt a difference in temperature in an hour of running, but this is a BIG unit that used to cool 800 sq ft.

to answer your question about capibilities, personally, i'd get the biggest, a/c unit that fits in your window, or better yet, cut an opening. i personally, had my unit stored in the basement from a move, and decided to get it out of the way, AND cool the garage with it. on a 90* humid day, i remember it cooling down to a comfortable 80* w/o opening the doors a lot. i think that is the most important, getting positioned in the garage and not opening the door unless absolute needed. if you're really interested i can get more specific measurements.

overall, i'd personally buy a new unit if you're worried about electric. i would NOT buy into energystar and powersaver crap, this is not something you'll run everyday and all the energystar means is that the fan turns off upon reaching target temps. chances are, that you probably won't reach cool enough. (though, maybe you do with drywall and insulation, etc.) again, i use it only when needed. have fun :buffing:
