I Used Dish Soap, I Used Dish Soap!!!!!!

Beemerboy

Just One More Coat
Today I had a 4x4 truck to do was pretty nasty on the bottom end mainly dirt...its a regular customer, that did some off roading...any who I decided that I need some max cut power on the wells, my pressure washer needs replacement, so this was a hand / brush job...

Anywho I decided to use some Dawn:eek:...got a bucket of water ready and poured in a liberal amount...talk about suds..I forgot how much that stuff suds up....my impression of dish soap on the wells and the tires was impressive...it cut the dirt and crap off like crazy...on most all cars I use SG or a citrus based cleaner...the Dawn stepped on these like no other for heavy dirt and some grease cleaning.

I don't condone dish soap for car cleaning but for wells, I have to say that I will be rethinking this for those purposes..

That's my .02

Well, at least you didn't use it on the paint. I wouldn't ever suggest that anyone ever use Dawn on any part of a vehicle, but, different strokes for different folks.

OK OK so the DS is not the best choice....but I think that like fillers if used correctly there is a place for it..this was one of them..IMO

There is one thing that I cannot contest....the results....I've seen both side of the fence and there was nothing wrong with what I saw today!

I normally don't but in the case of horribly dirty cars I start with dawn...plus it softens my hands:D

And for getting alot of suds, I agree put to much in and thats all you will get.

You've made my day...If such a highly trained pro as yourself can use DS then so can I..You're my hero!!:lol2::lol2:

Seriously, I've used it to underneath a few vehicles...

Confession time
I use Dawn on my chrome wheels  it removes the brake dust and leaves them nice and clean use a spray wax on them and they look like new.
I been doing that to them for 7 years and they still look like new. :D

Have you been holding out on us??? :hmmm:

Somewhere demons are spawning out of a portal that's been opened to Hell. At least you didn't use Simple Green in the same wash step, else we'd all be sucked into a black hole for all eternity.

I use simple green and water at about a 5-1 ratio to soak my pads in after polishing. :rofl

Leave them soak overnight and they rinse out clean :bigups

You mean the SG doesn't eat through your towels, the bottom of the bucket, the concrete driveway and subsequently open a portal to Hades?!?

simple green and dawn are actually not bad for heavy cleaning, engine wheels/wells. on heavy grease and dirt simple green has the edge over dawn. For doing a multi step detail job i always use dawn on the body it cleans all the dirt, sap, old wax, and light paint stains, dawn also is really good on the wheels and engine, i find that the dawn doesnt evaporate as quickly as the sg it can really soak in and instantly extracts the dirt and oil, another good thing is the price very cheap and you can dilute dawn to the exponential degree ..... the only bad thing is it kills the wax, and for the tires, plastics and rubbers in the engine bay it lightly dries them out but in no way damages or discolors anything (to fix this use your favorite plastic rubber and or tire conditioner, everyone complains about dawn but no one ever gives any reason why ?

The reason for not using Dawn is its a stripper of oils and for a regular car wash it, it takes off all the protection you have on the car, removes oils from the rubber, tires, seals, moldings, etc...as a once in a while wash I see no harm, but you should be re-protecting right after that..On this job I was looking at some nasty wells and since I did have a pressure washer, I needed the grease cutting abilities

When I was doing a lot of cars for the 'extra' cash, I always used DAWN or something similar for the initial wash. The cars I was getting were daily-driven, washed OCCASIONALLY with dirty rags (in one case, the guy would even "dry wipe":yikes:his black Grand Prix...no matter how dirty it was:passout:)
As for wax? Most of them thought it was just something you dug out of your ears.

I didn't even want to chance getting any of that crap into my buffing pads or cloths, so...

...I figured the lesser of the evils (plus the most cost & time effective) was for me to use the DS to remove the baked on, caked on, welded-in-place-by-age, dirt, crud and grime... with what I call an "extreme" wash (meaning the use of dish soaps, more intense chemicals: anything other than automotive/paint/wheel/tire specific cleaners etc). If there were any ill-effects from the DS wash, they were negligible compared to the years of abuse these cars already suffered. Too, they all received at least a 3-step clean/polish/seal afterwards to revitalize and protect the finish.
