I found a good Bold N Bright picture

I forgot all about this boat I detailed a couple years ago. I think I am blocking it from my memory... It was a looooooong day. 8 hours on that sucker and I still had to come back for a little extra work on the motors. Anyway, it was one of those boats that didn't get covered and never got cleaned up properly when it was brought back in. It had been sitting in a dusty boat parking lot for two years when I got ahold of it. This is the tread strip just behind the windshield. I guess it is so things don't slide around since I'm pretty sure you aren't going to be stepping on it. When I saw this picture in my album I wondered why I took a picture of a shadow, and then I realized it was a before/after picture. I love Bold N Bright..... :)

I took an artsy picture that day which didn't really turn out, but I loved the texture of that wall. I was down polishing the trailer hitch and looked up and saw what you see here. It just seemed pretty to me, but that could be because I was six hours into a polish on a white boat in the summer and was going a little crazy from heat and blindness. lol

This was back in the day when I first started experimenting with Poorboy's products. I haven't done much experimenting since, but I may have to start again. There is new stuff out there that needs to be compared and reviewed. :D

Pics look great, I use BNB alot and love the way it works...

I plan on posting a blackhole review soon...we need more reviews...

That pad looks like it has alot of red in it...SSR1 or paint removed from the surface???

Yeah, that was from the boat. This is one of those jobs where a rotary would have been reeeeeallllly useful. All the white and red and everything was oxidized and had to be cleaned up. That didn't even start the project. There was the whole deck and cabin and everthing else that came on that boat. He was fixing to sell it and wanted it cleaned up as best as it could be. The lot he was storing it at quoted him $500 to do the job, but they were probably going to attack it with five guys. I did it by myself for the same price. Really stupid thing to do, but at least I got some pictures, eh?

Nice work on the boat, was the boat in salt water or fresh water? Just curious on the clean up involved...

well your price was defiently low based on the work you did and how long it must have taken you...

I don't know for sure where he had it. The Great Salt Lake is pretty crappy as far as lakes go. I wouldn't take anything I cared about out there. They should have called it the Great Salt Swamp, because that is just about all I ever see of it. He could have taken it down to Lake Powell or Bear Lake. Those are more likely, so I'd say freshwater. It didn't have the corrosion I would expect from salt water.

These days I typically charge $60/hr, but that is for cars. I had no idea what to charge for boats. I don't do a lot of boats or RVs, but I have since learned that I need to charge by the foot. I charge around $17/foot now for boats and about $15/foot for RVs. The work really isn't that hard, but staring at a white surface for hours at a time is just really exhausting. Here is how I break down my pricing for 'site unseen' quotes. I don't follow those prices very closely, but people keep asking what I charge, so I put that together so I could just show them and get them off my back. lol I've learned that I should never quote a price until I have seen the job or have some idea of how much work it will really be. That boat taught me a good lesson.

Thats an excellent post and something I need to follow, to many times I have gottne into giving a price without seeing it first and it has burned me...I also like your site setup and price list, it seems to be appropriate for the amount of work...

I was using Four Star 4-40. I haven't found a better product for gel coats and big jobs like RVs. It is a fantastic paint cleaner akin to Klasse AIO. I've had terrific results with it and I keep it in stock by the gallon now. :) It's kinda hard to find, so when I do find it I horde it. ;)

Jngr, just some quick questions. That pad on the PC looked like an Edge pad, is that correct? If so, what speed do you typicaly use because Edge says no faster than 2000rpm. Just wondering what number that equates to on the PC. And great work by the way.

Erik

I have no idea how fast that equates to. I've had Edge pads from one end of the dial to the other without a problem, but typically I run it on 5. 4-40 is an effective enough product that I don't need to run it past that. Also, in the past the smaller pads weren't using center discs (the part that both pieces of foam are attached to) and the ends were a little jagged. I've had more than one Edge pad shred and split apart because of that, so the 2000 rpm rule may have been because of that design. They fabricate new smooth discs for the pads now and have done so for a year, so it isn't likely to happen again.
