I clayed my wheels!

This was my first time using clay and basically my first time cleaning anything the right way.



These wheels were bought used so I figured they deserved a good start before putting them on my car for the summer.



Here's what I did:



1. Pressure washed for about 30 seconds to remove big chunks of dirt

2. Used Meg's wheel cleaner, and rinsed off. For one really bad wheel, I had to scrub and repeat this step about 3 times for the wheel to get clean

3. Dried Wheels

4. Clayed my wheels with Meg's Clay Bar and Quik Detailer

5. Dried off the QD

6. Applied Michelin's Brake Dust Repellant



For four wheels this took nearly four hours!!



It seems easy enough but my clay ended up being REALLY dirty, I broke my clay up into 3 pieces and ended up throwing two away. It just became black.



Anyway, Just wanted to share my experiences. Does anyone have comments or questions or ways I can improve? Thanks!

I would really like to know how you like the Michelin Brake dust repellant.



Don't know how you could improve on a process like that.

I'll have to see how well it works once I put the wheels on my car. I did a search on it before I bought it tho and the review seemed to be good.



Use "Michelin Brake Dust Repellant" as your search term. I'm also wondering if this product is a good replacement for a wax.

Any tips for cleaning the back of the wheels? I took mine off and tried to wash/clay them but gave up pretty fast. Nothing was coming off. The front of the wheels turned out great though.

yeah same here. on the qx4 i can only do the back (drum brakes) and the front didnt come out too great. the wheels are painted exactly like the car, same color and everything but parts of it are starting to chip. on the MPV, oh forget about it not even A2z and clay will remove even the outter part of the rim .

For really nasty wheels, you can try the *mildest* scotchbrite pads, the ones made for nonstick cookwear. Might do a little marring, so go easy.



Heh heh, I've brought some pretty awful wheels back from the dead using just the Scotchbrites, EFHI, A2Z, clay, AIO, and PI-III RC/MG. I've used my AutoInt ABC stuff for this a few times too.

Yah. I ruined my clay so bad doing two of the wheels. But it turned out A LOT better. Still not what I wanted, but I'd have to advise patience and many coats of your cleaner...spray...clean off, spray, clean off...etc.
