How Would You Get This Off??

Beemerboy

Just One More Coat
Baked on to a BMW rim.

Clay comes to mind but really not sure...any real strong cleaners you really have to be careful with as it eats threw the finish on these type of rims....don't ask me how I know this

What products have you tried so far?

I haven't its from another forum and was trying to help the guy out...the simple green sounds OK but you really have to watch that stuff on these rims

I would try clay... But it seems to me that the finish might be damaged...

The cleaning power of AIO might help also... Simple Green is quite strong and I agree, it might damage the finish.

If you do try it, use a rag and just spray it on to see what it does. You can quickly rinse the wheel off afterwards.

This is going to sound facetious, but what about Dawn? Will it harm the rims? Dawn is really good at cutting grease and all...

WARNING: Whatever product is used, DO NOT USE ON HOT RIMS. Let them cool off first.

If you have a high quality vapor steam machine, it would be a piece of cake and won't damage. Could still take some time though.

Wow never thought of that one! ...and I have a steam machine... Good advice! I think that's worth a shot!

That is excellent advice, I do this alot for heavy dusting thats really caked on, however like you said it takes a while and the steam machine I use doesn'e hold a lot of water and periodically needs to re warm up.

German breaks are a pain, the seam to have the worst dust, gets over everything. I would use clay, I have delt with rims worse then that and clay will take it right off, also tell the guy to get some wheel sealent so its easier next go around

Judging from the looks of the caliper, they were at some point in time washed with an acid/alkaline based cleaner. Big question first, is this wheel already clean when the picture was taken?

I usually use Auto Magic's Red-Hot diluted 10:1 with water (10 water : 1 Red) and rarely have a problem unless they have seen excessive neglect. In which case, provided the customer is willing to incure the extra cost, I'll remove the rims (allowing for ease in cleaning the inside), and go with a 5:1 mixture never letting it dry on the rim.

On heavy pitted coated rims, I've had some luck in the past using easy-off oven cleaner. Spray it on, agitate it with a wet towel/soft bristle brush, then rinse it off -- DO NOT LET IT DRY & as with any cleaner, test it first in a small spot.

Me, i'd use acid and quickly get it off before it did any harm. But it looks like a bug and tar remover would do the trick. Looks like some road tar anyways.

I would try a citrus type cleaner..it is a little acidity...not not like any dedicated wheel acid...Orange Blast is one....and let it dwell a few and try a Magik Eraser....

another would be a strong cleaner polish...maybe with a mothers power ball with cleaner polish on it instead of metal polish...

they look pretty baked on....

What about Poorboy's Spray and Rinse Wheel Cleaner?
This is one of my favorite products.I have used this on wheels that have never been cleaned(for years) and this product did the job with a minimum of effort.

Agreed, S&R has worked for me with a 3 Series who had baked on Brake Dust (Orange/Black/Pitting). Let it sit for a bit, then massage the cleaner with some gloves on. Wash off, works extremely well.

Otherwise, Paint Polish/Adhesive Remover will work. That looks like a really weird case though.

i use simple green, if its a customers car use simple green, if its your personal car (i would have to ask why are your rims so dirty).... i would power wash the wheel to remove heavy dusting......spray with simple green, set for a few minutes.......powerwash off and your done......i like simple green because it doesnt destroy the clearcoat like some heavy acidic wheel cleaners.....simple green is biodegredable (sp)....simple green is a great safe cleaner

Ok excuse my ignorance but since no one has asked yet. What is it on the wheel? Based on how everyone is replying I would assume Brake Dust but since it isn't mentioned anywhere I thought i would ask.

I would think that PB APC or some DAWN would do the trick if it is brake dust and also like the Mr. Clean Eraser idea those things are amazing.
